Just got back from the dealer where I bought a new 2008 R1200R!!!! Test ride proved what everybody here has said, "Wow, what a great bike!". Adding big Givi topbox (ugly but practical) with the LED light kit, handguards from the GS, it has a low seat and I need a high one so either OEM or Bill S., HID driving lights on RCU or LumaLink brackets, maybe headlight modulator, maybe bar riser/backs. I read through everything here over the last few days, thanks to everybody for all the information. Fun bike!

I already have the permagrin but it is now combined with major eye strain from reading every possible lighting post on HID, halogen, kelvin, relays, brackets, etc. I think the rear hugger is the first add-on, I like to buy "Made in USA" when possible and the carbon version (more $) is made here.

I felt like I'd be banished if I put a photo up without a single add-on to the bike. If I show the minimalist cylinder head guards that the dealer is installing would that count?

I've got an appointment for a ride-in with Bill Mayer for a seat and I've been emailing today about the lights. One of the guys at PIAA said that his friend just put the 610s (HID) on his BMW so I'm trying to get that guy on the phone and hear about how great they are.

The LED kit comes from AdMore Lighting via TwistedThrottle and creates a huge light display across the back of the topbox for brake/running lights and turn indicators. Check out

If I'm wearing a big textile jacket with armor (maybe a suit!) that thing doesn't exactly compress into some saddle bags. I've also got to stow the helmet and the huge boots. ATGATT!

A full size 2 piece Aerostich Roadcrafter will fit in one of my bags (a 1 piece would be easier), and my Concept-II flip-face helmet fits in the other, with room for gloves and some other small clothing articles. I wear Prexport boots, which are generally more comfortable than anything else I wear, so I just leave those on unless I'm attending a rally for a day or two - then I'll put them at my bunk until they're next needed.

The PIAA 610 HIDs are out due to weight being excessive for the LumaLink brackets. There was also going to be problems mounting the ballasts, etc. so considering all the other lighting options that I already passed up but they'll go on the LumaLinks. I'm going with the HID conversion for the OEM high beam and headlight modulator for the low beam so I should have enough light even w/o the blazing 610s. I pick up the bike today!!!!!!!

For stowing gear - I'll pack a long coiled cable lock in my tank bag and run it through the jacket and over-pants and lock to the bike. I did add one of those bolt-on helmet locks. I've not had a problem with this setup so far. My riding boots are pretty comfy for walking around in.

After reading most of the posts here and all the lighting threads at AdvRider I'm moving forward with my lighting modifications for the bike. TrailTech SC4 HIDs hanging below LumaLink brackets, a FutureVision.com HID high beam conversion, and a Comagination headlight modulator for the low beam. I'll have the "triangle of light" so that others can see me (if they're looking!) combined with very good lighting for use in traffic and a blaster high beam for the mountain roads. I'm going to take the "before" pics tonight and I"ll put up the "afters" when it is done.

Okay Don, I like the idea, but maybe I"m too big (okay, fat...) since I picture a Roadcrafter suit for me with back/hip/knee armor protection being fairly uncompressible. No saddlebags for me due to the lanesplitting in SoCal traffic. I'm sure when you see the pics of my bike you'll want to squint when looking near the stern thus minimizing the impact of el Grande Givi...

One small concern with your plans.. is the Comagination headlight modulator CANBUS compatible? I was somewhat (well - actually a LOT) involved with getting Kisan to engineer one that didn't cause a flashing bulb-failure warning in the instrument cluster when it modulates. The Kisan one now is completely CANBUS compatible - no error messages and the latest one is really plug and play (takes minutes to install)..

Just a thought. Don't know much about Comagination..

I just looked through the Comagination website. Forgot the brand, but I have one of these for an H4 bulb. I see nothing on the website indicating that they've addressed the CANBUS bulb-warning problem. My past experience with their tech support has not been real positive either. And it won't be plug/play.

The current Kisan one - you unplug the wiring harness where it goes into the headlight shell, plug that into a connector going to the modulator electronics, then another wire from the electronics gets plugged into the shell. You mount your daylight sensor - and you're done. I tie-wrapped/two-face-taped the modulator assembly to the mounting bracket for the horn. No wires to cut, quickly reversable, no BMW warranty issues. And no bulb-monitor warnings.

Kissan unit is on the way, Comagination package will be returned unopened. Plug-and-Play is the way! Thanks for going through the trouble with Kissan to get their unit right for the CANBUS system. Gordy is starting to work on my LumaLink brackets so I am going to deal with all the electrical stuff at the same time.

After noticing Amosthere previous post in this thread I invested and just received the admorelighting kit for the GIVI E-52 case... it come with a bunch of cables but without to much plug in explanations.

What are the R1200R specific and safe general precautions to take in order to plug in properly the admorelighting kit into the R1200R electrical system.

I don't want to do it myself but meantimes to avoid confusion and mess I want to be able to direct a little the mechanic who will do it.

This kit is suppose to enhance the visibility of the bike when braking by boosting with LED stripes the transparent red "bumpers" that are place around the GIVI case.
