Oil weeping at the coolers

Post by brem »

I just picked up my bike after it had been in getting its frame replaced; someone tried to steal it a couple of weeks ago and broke the steering lock, so it was in for insurance repairs. After riding home I was looking at the shininess of the new frame and happened to notice that oil was weeping where the lines clamp onto the oil cooler fittings. It was enough to drip a bit onto the telelever arm. Given that the frame was replaced the dealership must have had to take most of the front end of the bike apart, so I'm wondering if they topped up the oil to replace what was lost when the lines were disconnected and drained and there's a little too much in there. It was getting dark by the time a few minutes to cool off went by so I didn't get a chance to look at the sight-glass and see how full it is, but I'll do that tomorrow morning. Anyone have any opinions?

Is the oil leaking from both or one of the coolers?

Examine both coolers carefully, use light and shine it from both sides..

It happened to me on my 2002 with 63,000 miles. I found a used cooler on Ebay for 33.00.

Mine used to leak only on long and fast hard drives, not on 12 miles commutes.

I am not sure if this solves your problem.

The trick is to find the source of oil leak.

It was leaking from both. I'm kind of hoping that it's not as big a deal as having to replace them, since it only has 13,500 miles on it and they weren't leaking before the bike was taken apart.

Don't do a thing....take it back to where it was repaired.

If both sides are leaking then they did not secure the clamps properly.

Check all the clamps.

Hope this helps.
