Should I buy a used R1200R

Post by Matt »

I am considering buying a R1200R and recently have been reading some posts here and not noticed many common problems with these bikes but should I buy a used R1200R and is there any common problems to look ou for. My dearler has a couple of used 1200R's, one has 2 previously owners lots of extras, heated grips, ABS, ASC, computer, centre stand, fairing but no ESA, is the ESA an essential option, the other bike has 1 previous owner ESA ABS heated grips but no computer. I was also a little concerned with buying a bike with two previous owners, is the amount of previous owners something to worry about.

If the price is right and your getting it from a reputable dealer I wouldn't be too concerned about it. There's not a lot you can really hide. The engines don't get broken in till around 10k anyway. I'd recommend to anyone thinking about getting one of these to test ride one with a lot of miles on it. What a difference once the engine loosens up.

I'd be suspicious of a relatively new bike with 2 owners, but overall these are fairly reliable machines. My impression is that most(not all) BMW owners are meticulous on maintenance and don't beat their machines to death. Something to check on is if the warranty work on the brakes, antenna ring, and software upgrade were done. Also verify that the 600 mile service was performed, the break-in service is probably the most important service a bike will have. Good luck with your purchase, it's a fun bike and easily modified to suit your needs.

The bike was a demo bike for 3 months then a private owner for one year, I also cant decide if the electric suspension is worth while.

The reality is there aren't that many squids that can afford this type of bike so in all likelyhood it's not thrashed. I know of 3 previous members of this board who sold theirs pretty quick after purchase because they were a little "aprehensive" about the bikes performance being above their respective skill levels. A used BMW, at a dealership, is nothing to be afraid of, for the most part. As for the ESA, I wouldn't get it personally. The thing to remeber about it is if you ever want to upgrade the shocks there are currently no providers of ESA compatible components. I'd personally (and already have) upgrade the standard stockers with Ohlin's or similar. It is a short sweet process to change the preload/dampening for the plan of a days ride. Best Regards

Yes.

No. As long all of the factory recall/upgrades have been completed.

Not at all. Upgrade the stock Showa's to Ohlins or Hyperpro after you wear out the OEM shocks. Unless being able to do the same changes to the same shocks in 2 minutes without possibly getting one of your hands slightly dirty is very important. I wouldn't want to pay for ASC either though...

No. I think that 99% of all BMW riders who would have used the "loaner" while their RT, LT, or super clean, extra farkled GS is being fully serviced and detailed are not the the type to even utilize the great performance of the 1200R, let alone abuse it. ;) The 1200R is bulletproof, as long as it has a complete service record you should have nothing to worry about.

I agree, my 07R1200R was a dealer service loaner. It came with 4500 miles on it,I road tested it for 50 miles and loved the bike. Those 4500 mile's reduced the price to $10,200 a trade off I think was well worth it.I have 10,000 mies on it now no problems other than taking it back for the recall's.I would think these bike's have some factory warr. yet.I would not want the ESA either, ride it stock till they wear out then add what you want. With the difference you could buy a lot of extra's for sure or just save the cash.

I bought mine as a repairable write off through my mechanic( independent specialist) it had 3600 km on it and I was a little apprehensive, but it has turned out to be a gem . It had mainly plastic damage, dented tank -yet to be fixed as I cant be without it, and a broken damper which i havent replaced. Its the best oilhead i've had so far, has'nt used a drop of oil , now has 6500km and it is as sweet as. It only has heated grips and centre stand and i've replaced the broken zteck screen, besides relacing the broken plastics, which theses bikes seem to have lots of,plastic that is
