I had no problems with mine either - in about 17k miles, but I still had it done. The defect is there, just waiting until the least opportune time, so..

That's interesting. Mine is from the end of 2006 and dealer still called me in to have it looked at. Thing is when I checked I did find some nasty corosion on top of the shocks shaft witch can't be good for the seals. When the rain goes I will drop by to have it looked at.

Went to the dealer yesterday and turned out my steering damper didn't need replacing they just wanted to make sure.

BTW the corosion cleaned of with a scothbright type of thing and as it was on the part of the shaft that doesn't move threw the seals at all I guess it will be fine. Might be a good idea to keep an eye on the damper shaft though esspecialy the bit that you hardly see because of the telelever bridge that covers it.

Just for the record, If any of you get motorcycle consumer news, you will see recalls are on all brands of motorcycles. I just went through my last 7 magazines and listed below are the names of bike manufactures that had recalls and in how many issues out of the 7 they appeared in. BMW is not alone.

Ducati 2 issues
Triumph 2 issues
Harley 2 issues
Kawasaki 4 issues
BMW 2 issues
Buell 1 issue
Piaggio 1 issue
Honda 2 issues
Moto Guzzi 1 issue
East side choppers 1 issue
Big dog 1 issue
Victory 2 issues
Suzuki 2 issues
Hyosung 1 issue
Yamaha 1 issue

Well, my bike was one of the lucky 60 for the damper recall. Service writer said it was an "inspect then replace, not a replace only recall" but I got a new one out of the deal. They also fixed my gas gauge so I'm a happy camper. Yes I've had all of the "issues" for the '07 bikes, am I mad at BMW? Frankly no they are machines and therefore not perfect. The issues with the bike have been handled quite well by the dealer, not the dealer I bought it from BTW (purchasing dealer is 3 hours away and a new dealer 1 hour from home opened up since I bought the bike) And with the exception of the software re-map all of the warranty issues are from supplier provided parts, not BMW manufactured components. Still the bottom line is this is the finest bike I have ever had in the barn and I am hanging on to it. Have fun

I received my notice from BMW on the steering damper recall this week. Dropped by the dealer for the inspection and sure enough it needs to be replaced. Part has to be ordered and servicing scheduled.

On a ride last year I was glad the bike had a steering damper. I was going a bit fast on a country road. There was a bend to the right which would have been fine, except the road dipped slightly in the bend; this couldn't be seen due to the terrain (not a hill or anything, just some tall weeds). As I went over it the front end shimmied for second. I think with no steering damper that might have led to a tank slapper, or the front end sliding out. My fault for going too fast; glad the bike could handle it.

Dan - thanks. I'm ZS25482 - 350 or so before you so I'm probably out of the range of VINs..
