New Pipe question

I just ordered a Leo Vince slip-on and I have a few questions for those of you that have installed aftermarket pipes.

1- my Clymer workshop manual states that when replacing an exhaust system,muffler or air filter that is not stock to do the following.
# disconnect the negative battery strap during the work.
# after the mods reconnect the ground and turn on the key,,do not start the bike..Open and close the throttle fully two or three times.this sets up th ECU to the new settings.

# Turn off the key and then turn it back on and start the bike.
# Ride slowly for the first mile or so in order for all systems to reset.

Also the instructions that came with the Muffler recomend that the battery be disconnected during the install as well.

Anyone ever do this? Has anyone ever heard of this?

Thanks for your help.My pipe arrives next week and I just want to do the right thing.

The Clymer is (in a roundabout way) telling you to reset the Motronic computer to "default" settings - ie wiping it's memory of the fuel injection settings it's developed around the way you ride and the way the bike is set up. Turning the engine on, and twisting the throttle to full a couple of times allows the Motronic to re-guage the full throttle movement allowable.

IIRC it's easier to pull one of the fuses rather than disconnect the battery (can't remember which one - but someone will!).

Do I really have to do this? What happens if I just slip on the new pipe and go?

nothing drastic. :)

The fuel Injection may run a bit rich/bit weak until the motronic analyses enough exhaust gas to alter the mixture. It may also run a bit rough unless you do the valves & balance the TBs.

I may just slip it on and go and see how its runs.I can always reset the ECU later and try again.

If I'm ever that side of the pond again I will deffo look up some R1150 boys. :biggrin:

I'm glad I came upon your post, as I've been looking at purchasing the Leo Vince carbon slip-on also. I don't really care about HP/Torque gain; I just want a better sounding exhaust. I've read the posts about just removing the stock exhaust, but I prefer the look of an exhaust in "that" space.

Please post some pics and let us know how "loud" the exhaust is.

PS BTW, someone is selling a used Staintune slip-on exhaust - does anyone know if they are very loud?

Hey Paul,
snap up the staintune pipe if you can,Much better all stainless,no repacking and the bolt on tab is welded to the muffler,,no straps.

I tried to fit my new Leo Vince last night,,Did Not Fit I.D. of muflet 2' o.d. OF BIKE PIPE 1 3/4" I CALLED THEM AND THEY SAID TO ADD SOME GASKET OR SHIM MATERIAL.and I did not like the strap with the rubber liner method of hanging.I just wanted a simple slip on and go muffler.

It goes back today,,,no more on line shopping for me the $30.00 I saved will cost me more in return postage.,I will try for the Staintune or rhe Remus at my dealer.
