Technical ??? - DJ's Canectomy

I have recently performed the canectomy, and now I am experiencing what I think are ignition related difficulties, manifesting as surging while accelerating . My local service manager is contending that the can removal may be the primary factor, further claiming that I may suffer burned out exhaust valves in the long run. I suspect the plugs or the coils or the fuel ump

Surging (from what I've read, I've never experienced it) was only ever an issue on a static throttle setting - ie long periods at the same speed with minimal throttle openings. Not during acceleration.

If you're getting an intermittent supply of fuel/sparks during acceleration (which is what your issue sounds like) then yeah either the mix is up the spout or you're experiencing a stickcoil failure.

Check the coils by removing the secondary plug caps - if the bike refuses to start at all, but WILL fire with the secondaries on then it's a good bet the stick coil is at fault - you can tell which one by removing the secondary coils one at a time and seeing which side removed makes the bike fail. (ie if the left side stickcoil has failed, removing the left side secondary will show this - removing the right side secondary won't affect starting because the right side primary coil is still working ok).

Do you still have the catalyst and Lambda sensor in there? What about the CCP? if that's still there the bike will be running leaner than it will without the CCP and having the can off will make it leaner still (IIRC).

Thanks. The cat & O2 sensor are still in place. I have put the muffler back on to debunk his contentions, and have pretty much succeeded at that. I will likely drop by the shop again today for further diagnoses.

I have performed a canectomy and regularly do long runs and not experienced any problems at all.Just thought you should know.

I like these challenges

Surging at steady speeds with DJ's mod. There is only one diference, slightly less restriction on the exhaust.

So what the tells me is:

The bike is being operated in the closed loop (with the O2 sensor controlling the mixture). I'm assuming the CCP (yellow) plug is on.

So I would have to say that the bike needs a tune up, specially sync of the TB's or a new O2 sensor (long shot) as I don't know the age and the mileage on the bike.

Let us know what comes of it......

My suspicions were correct, it was diagnosed yesterday as a failing coil. Should have the bike back for the weekend. :mrgreen:

Buy a couple.

They're easy to change and it's sensible to keep a spare. :)
