R1150R Transmission drain plug

Is it normal for the transmission drain plug to be non-magnetic on the 2002 R1150R? Thank you

The tranny drain plug on my 03 and my current 04 is non-magnetic. Although the same on the final drive is magnetic.

The 1100RT plug is magnetic and was interested to know why BMW did not see the need to make the 1150R plug magnetic. Thanks for all replies.

There are TWO transmission drain plugs. The "usual" drain on the side of the case is not magnetic, though you can replace it with a magnetic one if you desire. From Bob's or Max, the part number is 1854010.

The magenetic plug is located underneath the transmission, towards the side where the fill/drain plugs are. If you don't have a cat and just a Y-pipe, you should be able to access it with a large hex key. I'm thinking it was a 12mm, but now I can't remember if it was a 12mm or 14mm. If you have a cat, you will need to remove it to access the plug.

I have a cat but he likes to spend his time sitting on my R's seat. I think I will leave him there while I work on the tranny. I appreciate the info about the magnetic plug under the transmission. Didn't know that.

All's I'm sayin' is that I wasn't able to get to that plug underneath with a cat on the bike! If you can do it with a cat on the bike, well, you're a lot better than I am!

I agree it would be tough with a cat under the bike.

You can buy a 14 mm hex key and cut the short arm with a Dremel and a cut-off wheel so it will fit. You can also just cut a short section of the 14 mm key and use a wrench to drive it. In my case I was able to get it out w/o moving the CAT, but just barely.

Sources for 14mm Hex keys at an affordable price are Sears(maybe) or an industrial supply house like Graingers (about $5).
