Big Brass Screws won't work

Bike is a 2004 R with 34K miles. In the old days I could turn the bbs with a throttle body connected and adjust the throttle. These days the screws will only make the engine run good or bad. The idle speed doesn't work. I would like to adjust them because dealer switched out fast lever idle and it now idles @ 900-1000 rpm and would like to adjust to 1100 rpm. Is this problem indicative of some air lieak in the intake path? the bike runs fine otherwise, except for hesitation under hard acceleration.

Have you changed the plugs, fuel filter, and air filter? Have you cleaned the BBS? Then try a little techron, or seafoam in the fuel tank. I would start with those things and then go from there.

I agree. Remove the screws and clean them. Make sure you take note of their starting positions as a reference point before you remove them.
Turning the screws anti-clockwise should clearly increase your idle speed.
The engine will run poorly if they are not balanced. Are you using a twin-max or something similar?

yep, I'm using a twinmax. with all do respect I don't see seefoam or techron as some type of miracle cure. I have in the past months replaced air,fuel filters, plugs, used techron in the tank... cleaned the bbs
I think there is something more serious going on. The bike is also hard to start, this afternoon, I had to turn to open up the throttle a good amount before the bike would start.

Sounds like vacuum leaks in the intake runners somewhere. Check o-rings and clamps. If the bike doesn't cold start well, vacuum leaks are my first suspicion.

BTW, Techron is all that is needed to clean up the fuel system.
