Some clown backed into my parked bike, need side case help

First of all, hi folks, I'm been lurking here a long time, but never got around to posting before....

Anyway, I parked my 2004 1150R on the street last night, sideways -- that is, with the rear tire against the curb and the front tire pointing into the road. (Guess this was a mistake, but there wasn't a full space available, and after all, that's part of what's so great about riding these things, right?). Anyway, despite my having left a good five feet or so between myself and the car in front, when I returned to the bike this morning, I found my right sidecase on the ground, and my cylinder head guard (the black plastic kind) cracked and barely hanging on (Glad that was there though!) He was kind enough to leave a note, at least, I do give him a lot of credit for that....

So, the sidecase: it turns out that the metal piece that flips up and hooks into the black plasic luggage rail, to secure the case to the bike when it's locked, was snapped off. Anyone know whether I need an entirely new case, or at least a new interior portion? Or is that piece of the locking mechanism replaceable on its own?

What you need is a new multi-purpose box (the larger box that the handles and lock is a part of). However, them suckers ain't cheap. Figure $200 for a new one. You'll also need a set of rivets to replace the ones you have to drill out. BMW ones are $40/set, but I think you can use regular ol' hardware store rivets. You'll also have to transfer your old lock cylinder over to the new multi-purpose box. I'm not sure repairing it would save you much, if anything, over buying a brand new bag. Certainly not if someone else is paying for it. Moving your lock cylinder over should be pretty easy.

You should probably fill out an accident report at the local law enforcement agency, so there is a record of the incident. After that, I'd figure the cost of a new bag and engine guard (don't forget shipping!) and a little bit of labor time and take that to the offender and ask if he wanted to just pay you for the damage or if you should contact his insurance company. If it's just those two items, he should be able to get you whole again for about $500.

When I got rear-ended at low speed, I had the same damage to my system case. I expected the other party to pay for a new one. I think you should give the other person the part numbers and costs of the parts you need, and even a link so he can look it up himself. Why should you have to mess around with replacing parts on the case? If you handle it in a calm, professional way, you should get what you need.

If the latching mechanism is all that's damaged, then you can order that part individually from the dealer. Basically there are three large parts: Outer case (lid), inner case (base), and the latch assembly. It will come with the handle assembly, and the part you need. You should be able to re-use your lock tumbler. The latch assembly is held in with rivets.

If it was legit info the guy left in the note, bravo that he did so at all!

It's those instances where people do the damage and leave to avoid any responsibility that really irks me. Voice of experience.

If the guy stiffs you on paying for the latch, let me know. I have a guy making a couple of those latches for me. The modules are expensive and that hook is made of pot metal. He's making mine out of 6061 T6.
