Bandwidth Exceeded..
Arghhhh..
I periodically get this message when trying to get my R1200R fix.
Is there anything we can do $$$ that would up the bandwidth available for the site?

Re: Bandwidth Exceeded..
The LT site I am on accepts memberships so they have some money to work with. I always kick in a little to the boards I frequent so I can help insure they are there when I am. I'm in.
Re: Bandwidth Exceeded..
I got the same bandwidth error message a few weeks ago.
As a result, i realised that it was time to make a $$ contribution to the site - but when i tried to make one, i received the following message:
*The credit card you entered cannot be used for this payment. Please enter a different credit card number*
I tried with two different cards - but for some reason, neither were accepted.
Maybe Doug should look into this???

Ditto famousperson's comment. Thank you all for making this a great source of information on the R12R

Re: Bandwidth Exceeded..
I have made the donation and I get the "bandwidth exceded" message also. This is not to say that you shouldn't make the donation. When you do you get to go into Patrick's Playhouse and read political arguements.

Perhaps it's just me, but I've received the "bandwidth exceeded" prompt more than once over the past couple weeks.

I have also.. my thinking was - perhaps we can approach the website owner and see what $$ is required to make available more bandwidth?NCGS wrote:Perhaps it's just me, but I've received the "bandwidth exceeded" prompt more than once over the past couple weeks.

Re: Bandwidth Exceeded..
Hahaha, cute thread! (Did I just say "cute"?!)
Let me get ya'll up to speed because it looks like there is some confusion. The ISP (Internet Service Provider) that we use limits our traffic and charges for additional traffic. The bandwidth problem happens when we exceed our monthly allowance. You will notice that bandwidth exceeded issues always come towards the last few days of the month. The more frequent rise in them the last couple months is correlated to the weather. That is, the warmer it gets ,the more poeple think and talk about their bikes and the more they visit the site.
I try to streamline the site's monetary usage because donations are really light in general and I sometimes have to pay for fees and other things I need for the site (back up drives, maintenance software, etc). In general, I dont mind too much but when I am feeling poor or am pissed that no one is donating (especially when I see many new users generating value from the site), I post asking for some cash. This thread has spurred on some really generous donations this week and I am grateful to those that have contributed, especially our new members. Often times it is the "older generation" users of the site that carry the financial burden for everyone else with their repeat donations (DLM, TLM and greater). So, I was able to quickly raise the limit again. I believe we are at 70gb/month, which when you realize that this traffic is 90% textual (from the forums) is an inexplicably large amount of traffic. Our site is very popular!
So, rather than pay for bandwidth we dont use, I minimize the bandwidth #. Of course if we had people donating more often, this wouldnt be an issue and it would be one less thing I have to manage!
Since Jan. I think we've only had 15 or so people donating and I know that there are many more people using the site these days then in the past, but we have probably 1/10th the donation rank. I dont know what contributes to this change in user responsibility, perhaps we are just too large now? Maybe its just that no one talks about it anymore? Did you know we used to have to pay $3200 a year at ezboard - just to use the message board, thats ignoring isp and other charges? Its amazing! I dont know how we ever did it, especially when you consider that we had only a fraction of the users we have now and even back then roughly 1/3 to 1/2 of the donations go right to the govt in taxes.
Anyway, thanks again for this week's donaters. Its people like you that keep this place going!

Re: Bandwidth Exceeded..
Thanks for the clarification, Doug.
As a relative newbie, I want to say that until I read this thread, I had NO IDEA I needed to donate or even that I COULD donate!
I have my browser bookmarked to the R1200R forum index, which doesn't have the donation link on it.
Maybe it should.
Maybe it should be bigger.
Or maybe you could just broadcast a message in all the forums about the cash requirements on a periodic (quarterly?) basis.
Somewhere between whining/nagging/begging and simply informing newbies of the setup, there's a workable balance.
I chipped in at the lifetime member level and consider it a bargain. Thanks for doing this.

I can't see the donation link either. I've tried Safari on OS-X (my preferred browser for most non-business-related sites), and IE on XP, also on my MacBook Pro. I don't see the BMW logo, either. Everything above the BMW R1200R..... title line doesn't appear. I'll gladly donate as soon as I can find a way in.

Re: Bandwidth Exceeded..
I agree with Shiney. My browser does have the link but it is so small and unassuming that I didn't see it until it was pointed out. I would not be at all offended if I was "reminded" periodically that donations are greatly appreciated and even necessary to keep the site up and running.ShinySideUp wrote:I have my browser bookmarked to the R1200R forum index, which doesn't have the donation link on it.

On the H-D forum I used to subscribe to, a person's membership status was automatically shown as an icon every time they posted, so it was always apparent that there was a membership class. There was also a setup with PayPal so you could have automatic renewal for an annual membership if that's what you wanted.
So even though "bandwidth exceeded" showed up again last night--immediately after I donated--I still feel strongly that I have made a wise investment in my bike and enhance my riding pleasure by having signed up.

Re: Bandwidth Exceeded..
Thanks, Don. That did it. Don't know why I didn't try that. I sent a donation via PayPal. I agree with Bay Area Bill that I wouldn't take offense at all to receiving a more pro-active appeal for donations periodically.deilenberger wrote:Try opening the website homepage http://www.r1150r.org - took me a while to figure this one out.RonR wrote:I can't see the donation link either.
