Cleaning Wheels

Post by AllanCook »

I'm not obsessive about keeping my bike clean, but my wheels have gotten pretty funky. I tried a little dish soap and warm water, and it got a lot of it off, but there's still some pretty stubborn stuff on there. What do y'all use to keep your wheels looking reasonably clean?

The rear is pretty easy. Windex on a rag works for me. The front is much more difficult. I did it last time with car wax and a lot of rubbing--Windex, Simple Green, and Castrol Super Clean had no effect.

There was a thread on this a few months ago somewhere else on this forum. I don't remember where, but try a search on something like "wheel dirt" and see what comes up.

I use WD-40 to remove the tougher stuff that soap and water doesn't.

I've done a bit of m/c detailing over the years.. including for some friends with show bikes. I find detailing bikes therapeutic.

I use Mothers FX wheel cleaner (exclusively) , and a wheel brush I picked up from Hawg Wash (be careful, there are pictures of V-Twins on their site).

http://www.hawg-wash.com/ezdetailbrush.html

Spray on the Mothers wheel cleaner, let it sit a few minutes, hose it off, then hit the wheels with the brush and some hot-soapy water. They'll look like they did when the bike came out of the box.

The good thing about this particular brush is that it'll get into places you'll never get a wash mit, rag or sponge into.

This photo was taken not long after a quick wash job, not a detail. The wheels look pretty good.

Once you get them clean - a polymer paint finish sealer is a good thing to make them easy to clean in the future. I use "Rejex" - same thing is sold by CeeBailey as a screen cleaner/polish. Do several coats seperated by 24 hours cure time and you'll find the wheel dirt washes off with clear water.

Thanks Don, I believe I'll give that RejeX a try if I can find it.

Big, It's a Ztechnik bag.. bought it 2nd hand off ebay. It's ok for carrying small stuff, and possibly a rain suit, but not much more. It's really not made for a RR, so you have to unhook it to get the seat off.

Still, I like it for carrying my night glasses, a spare set of gloves, a sweat shirt, etc - rather than loading up a tank bag.

Open this link and scan down a bit. There's a video clip that shows you how it works.

Where did you find the Rejex? I can't find it around here. It may be something I have to get from the internet.

Another great cleaner is the "Simple Green" cleaners. There is a specific automotive version too. That stuff really melts the brake dust off the wheels. The stuff is non-toxic and we use it to clean scuba tanks for oxygen use, so I have no problem with it on my RR.
