serviceability

Post by mechanic savant »

Is it just me or has anyone else noticed how much easier these bikes seem to be to work on than the 1150's ??? I just put mine down for snow season (yes I'm envious of you folks who can ride all yr.) 10in. today & a nor'easter fer sun.!!! any who , gas tank removal was a breeze ,no need to take off the bag mounts to get the side panels off ..I was even able to get my old twisted mits to reach the elect. & fuel lines w/o a stream of profanity coming frim the shop (don't hold stress in I'm told) aside from the air filter looking a little smalish I was generaly impressed .. the fuel filter is even outside the tank ,give that engineer a cigar...& w/fewer elect connections fewer chances for failures ..while I've got the time I try to get some di-elect goo into the connectors ...there I'm done w/that diatribe :smt006

Why did you have to take the tank off to winterize your bike?

Allthough all is very nicely put together and the battery is actualy reachable the same day you start wrenching I wouldn't call it servicable as there's nearly nothing you can do without having some sort of computer to check or reset things. I even heard a guy who replaced the brake pads and had to go to the dealer to have the computer resetted witch had something to do with pushing the cilinders back. Still lot's of things are pretty cool though like the sports screen that only needs two bolts removed to completely take it of and stuf like that.

I took the tank off to make sure nobody had or is trying to nest in the air filter housing (I'll get you waskals) also I like to check for any debris or alien junk that may have made its way into the nooks & crannies , once had a nest on top of the alternator .. I also like to look @ the cables & lines for any distress ..wow the cable junction box is a piece o cake to get to vs. the 1150 sweet &as previously said where ever possible to get some di-elect goo into the connectors ..Yeah I know they are weather-pac type connectors but corrosion is the enemy & I'm a fightin im ..Plus I'm nosy!!! I wanna see what I paid for & how it's put together ..as I hope to keep this gem fereva & do as much of the work as possible I don't think it's a bad thing to be familiar w/its innards!!!

Me too! That's why I'm disappointed that 1) there's no paper service manual (and the electronic one only runs on PCs using Windows XP or later), 2) there are no wiring diagrams, and 3) there is no information available on the CANbus electrics. Not particularly owner-service-friendly, IMO.
