Why did they put the key in the back?

Is it just me or should the engineer who decided to put the key in the back on top of the license plate be demoted and sent to the accessories division? Did they measure this area using real hands or possibly one of Santa's elves?

Now that's colder it's almost impossible to put the key in the back and turn it with thick gloves on to get the seat off..My hands aren't abnormally huge and even with summer weight gloves it's a bit of a hassle. Is there a design --form follows function benefit that I am missing here?

Good point.. the seat release key slot on my '05 GS was on the left side of the frame just under the seat. Piece o' cake..

Not so with the RR.. It's really a minor inconvenience, when you get right down to it.

no joke. i have small hands for a dude (I'm over it) and have difficulty getting that key in. every time i have to get the seat up, i have prom flashbacks...

I too don't care for the seat lock position. It is however, a very small nit to pick. The only time I have to use it is when I need the oil filler wrench in the tool kit. The bike doesn't use any oil though, so I really never have to use it.
Left side would have been much better.

Theory:

I believe the lock situation is the same as with the stock seat; both were designed for space aliens with tiny hands and weird shaped butts.

Hmmm.... must be me..

The seat works for me - and the lock is a non-issue, except I always forget and leave the key in it. Luckily since I can't ride away without a key.. it's a non-issue.

The seats getting better (But I'm still waiting for a Sargent) and I've only had the seat off about five times so where the key is don't matter.
BUT -- the rear drive is a concern.

The seat lock position is ridiculous! Try getting to it with the luggage rack installed!! The whole seat thing is a sore point with me. I have trouble getting it back on and I certainly don't like sitting on it for more than 30 minutes.
