System Case Question

I just received and installed the system cases. Does anyone know if the lid/seal is adjustable?

One of the cases does not close as tightly as the other. It has a noticeably wider gap between the lid and the case. In fact, I can see two of the metal hasps (or whatever they are called) in the reveal between the lid and the case when the case is closed. On the other case, I cannot see them and the reveal is a consistent ~3/16" all the way around.

Hmmmm, My seal is water tight. Are you sure everything is lined up properly? I know that sounds like I am calling you an idiot or something but that's all I can figure that might keep it from closing properly.

The lids do seem to need a bit of finesse - though they seem robust. Mine have an apparent gap on the outside, but judging by the vacuum or stiction (whatever .. ) I have to overcome to open them sometimes, the seal is unaffected. No water in so far, despite some heavy rain in Queensland on my shakedown run ... http://r1150r.org/board/viewtopic.php?t=11609

I don't mean to sound churlish, but is there anything in the case that would prevent it closing all the way?

It's a fair question. I noticed it when it was loaded, but the condition also exists when the case is empty.

In that case I'd take it back. Sounds as though a hinge may have been mismounted.

When I've had this happen - it almost always is the inner retaining strap being caught in the gap.. I find I sorta have to throw them into the case as I'm closing it if they aren't fastened and the slack taken out. It can do this with the case filled or empty..

Might not be - but worth checking before returning it for warranty..

Here is what the dealer says: "The BMW bags have never been uniform in their lid alignment. The alignment does not need to be perfect as the bag is sealed with a double wall and gasket. Before you use the bag, please try a little sunshine, to heat up the bag, this usually leads to a more proportional fit. You can also move the bag by hand toward a proper fit when it is warm."

I dunno... a $450 system case should have a better fit and finish, IMO. Judge for yourselves:

See how nice the right case looks compared to the left case? The left case is clearly not aligned right.

Sunshine in Seattle might be a little hard to find this time of year. Just for grins hit it with a hairdyer or heat gun, before you take it back. I'm with you @ $450 a pop tupperware should work

Just a follow up:

I spoke with the local dealer in Seattle. They've never heard of the sunshine treatment before. The service department has never heard of inconsistencies in the bags, and said that they are the most water-proof system cases BMW has made. Thus, an uneven seal in which the hasp is visible is likely to leak. This issue will likely be covered by the BMW warranty, but there was some speculation that this case may have been a demo case or something.
