Need Gas Can trafficker

Post by Shaman »

My State went CARB and I did not realize it.
Now I can not buy any vented 5G gas cans.

If someone lives in a state with vented cans and would be willing to procure and ship a couple cheapo's to me, PM me to negotiate. ;)

What's a "CARB" can?
CARB stands for California Air Resources Board. They established environmental requirements for portable fuel containers in California. Some other states have also adopted these requirements. U.S. EPA plans to adopt similar national requirements in January 2009. No-Spill meets these requirements with the following features:
1. An autostop, self venting nozzle that stops the flow of fuel when the target tank reaches full.
2. A single opening for filling & pouring. No separate vents or openings.
3. A treated can body for very low permeation.
4. Automatic closure. Nozzle automatically springs to the closed position when not pouring.
They are the crappy self venting ones that burp and throw gas everywhere.

I want the vented kind (note second hole on back):

I can look for you, but I have not paid attention to the cans for a long time. All of mine are the old style.

Sounds fair, based on acceptance of the deal of course.

I wish my state would start emmissions testing. My neighbor's 1972 buick with a 350 badge at best runs on 6 cylinders, fewer than 6 cylinders for the first 3-4 minutes during the winter. In the summer, he can put it in gear without stalling after only a 60 second warm up. Which is good cause the exhaust is shot too.

Then there was that Caddy I followed today...

gag, cough, gag

I thought my eyes were going to bleed.
I was dreaming when I wrote this, forgive me if it goes astray...

eBay has one;
Shipping is too high. And the crap about 'gone forever' is a little overboard.

Online dealer thought he had venting and shipping was $12 for 2, this guy is charging $20 for 2. For that extra 8 bucks I can get a Scribner Jugs.

Scribner Fuel Jug

You can buy manually vented cans. Maybe once all states and Canada are CARB compliant it will be too expensive to buy them from Mexico or Europe....
But until then, eBay opportunist won't get my business.

A reasonable price with reasonable shipping is all I am asking.

Because I am not.

Can anyone get a local price on the Scribner Jugs with hose?

I am embarrassed to say that I bought a can at Wal Mart recently and I could not figure out how to make the gas come out. The design is really hideous.

Anyway, why not just drill a venting hole in the can and cover it with a piece of duct tape when you are not using it?

You should be able to get a Scribner at a local Honda/Yamaha dealer that supports the MX riders well. I got one at a local shop, don't remember what I paid though. But it was definitely more expensive than Wal-Mart.

One word of caution about the Scribners, although it's great for filling MCs and ATVs because of the long hose. I learned not to fill it over about half full. The vent is very close to the spout, so when it's full you end up trying to pour gas very slowly so it doesn't come out the vent.

And you have to do this while holding the hose in the MC or ATV, holding 5 gal of gas one handed in the other hand, and watching to make you don't over-fill all at the same time.

+1 one drilling a hole! (Good one rd, I bet I get my Ryobi out next time it's empty)

The place that sent me the self venting can not get the vented now.
They are going to send me a Scribners and hose instead for me to try out.

Thanks for the pointer about the handle and pouring.

There MUST still be vented $15.00 cans in the world available for order.
I will find them.

Sorry. I WAS kidding, but I'll take a look at the Wal-Mart next time I go. This is Georgia, and I'm not sure if we have gone the way of the new "CARB" cans yet. I haven't bought a gas can in years.

I'll help ya out. This IS Texas, by god! If we let blind people hunt, I'm sure we still sell every and anything that is dangerous.

Caveat: I don't have a lot of spare time these days. Tell me exactly what I'm looking for (in female non-mechanic, non-familiar with gas cans, type language) - a picture of the exact thing you want and where I can find such item would be helpful. Someone else probably knows exactly what you need and could beat me to it. If not, then just let me know.

Like Gypsy, this is Texas, and I think these are available in the local walmart. I'll run out this evening and check to see.

Do the still sell the 1 gallon vented cans in cali? If so will the spouts interchange? Just a though? I'll check this evening and report back in.

I read about the Blind Hunting.
As a hunter, I am still mortified.

About the Gas Can.
Handle on Top, prefer a second handle on back, and a MANUAL vent hole with flip tab or screw down.

If the can says SELF-VENTING with no small second hole in it... NOT interested. If it says CARB Compliant, NOT interested.

Here are some pictures (note the SECOND hole present):

Okay - if Lobo doesn't come up with one tonight, I'll check around tomorrow for you. If no 5 gallon, would you settle for the 1 or 2 gallon?

I checked out this place http://www.nospill.com/zipsearch.htm and there are 5 stores within a couple of miles of my house that will possibly still have something like that.

But I don't need the cans, so if you find one before I do, please post a message so I don't end up with a couple of 5 gallon cans.

Or if I do, perhaps someone else would want them.

Nah, just 5G.
I have a couple of the 2G and 1G already.

Don't feel obligated to buy them and get the wrong ones.
If you are not sure about the 'type', take a camera phone pic of what is there and I can verify the actual item.

And you will have no problem finding other 'buyers' if you can find "manually vented" ones.
