Threaded tabs on forks?

I have a 2003 RA. I've just noticed there are two tabs on the forks, down near the hub. These are threaded, but from looking at them nothing has ever been screwed in, since the paint is in tact. Not mentioned as far as I can tell in the Clymer manual. Does anyone know what they are for?

I have my hand up and waving :smt039

I think it's because our fork is used for several different BMW bikes and some have a front fender that mounts off those points.

It's just a guess... :D ...someone else might know for sure.

No, I have ABS and it's not related to that. I also wondered if it were a fixture for some sort of BMW tool that the dealer uses to work on the brakes. I don' t think so, since mine has been worked on more than once and the paint on the threads is perfect.

Can't post a pic right now, but I just went to the previous pictures of the week and found the tabs in most of them. They are on the front of the fork, about halfway between the side reflectors and the axles. They point to the front of the bike.

I've got to go with DJ on this one. It seems to be the most likley reason.

I know the S has a slightly different fork but it front fender has a mount down there.

Also the RS has a mounting point down there.

They're for the fork leg cover portion of the front fender. It's cheaper to have one part number for most all the bikes and let the tabs hang out on the other bikes.

I use one of mine's tabs to support the BC-800 bicycle computer's trigger unit. Thank you BMW.

Anyone other ideas for a use for it? Fogs maybe? Curb feelers?

Yep, I've got a K1200GT which has front fenders that extend down toward the bottom of the fork. The bottom ends of the fender attach down there.

There are light mounting bars that attach to both the top and bottom tabs for mounting a variety of lights; one on each side. Nice setup... Unfortunately I can't find any vendors that sell this kind of setup... (came with the 'bike)
