Long hiatus, but want to get my R back on the road...

Well, I'm back to commuting 50m/day after an unsuccessful 2-year stint with self-employment. My '02 R has been sitting for most of this time on a float charger in the unheated garage.
My local BMW place wants quite of bit of $$ to do the 'scheduled maintenance' that I've missed, and I'm curious to know if I'd be doing any damage or running undue risk by just changing the oil/filter, topping off the tires and checking for loose bits. The bike starts right up and seems to be fine, though not quite as smooth as I remember. Approx. 14K on the odometer.
Primary question: Will I damage the bike if I don't adjust the valves yet? It's definitely overdue for this adjustment, but I can't afford the dealer rates yet.
I'm grateful for any advice you could provide, and have a great day - Spring is springing!
