Windshield Options

Given the short riding season here it is almost imperative that you have something more than a flyscreen for protection from the elements. So far I've only found the BMW tall screen, the Parabellum touring screen, and the Cee Baileys screens. Any other options? Of the three I'm leaning towards the Cee Baileys but it doesn't come with mounting hardware and utilizes the hardware off the BMW tall screen. Since I really don't want both screens can you purchase the mounting hardware separately? The way I read it, the BMW part number shown on CB's website 71-60-7-699-573 is for the mounting bracket without the screen. Has anyone investigated this yet?

There are also the screens that come with the Parabellum Scout , or on the bikini fairing on the Wudo and Wunderlich R1200Rs at their sites.

Yes, you can order the tall bracket only. Their screen is a separate expensive part that does not work. It causes buffeting that will beat the snot out of your helmet, as well as your shoulders.
CeeBailey 20" is the winner for me!

While searching for the Wudo fairing, I came across this:

Good find. Appears that angle is adjustable. My German is not so good...is the 128 Euro is for the bracket only or does that inc the shield.
Also found that GIVI now lists the A147 shield for the R1200R.
I'm thinking I'll need one sooner rather than later as I rode the bike home today and nearly froze. Couldn't really tell how well the little flyscreen shield thingy worked as for most of the way had a 30mph side wind to contend with.
Those heated grips sure are nice though.

The BMW sport screen positively sucks IMHO.. it is a bit too tall or angled to upright, and puts the wind buffet directly on my chin bar of the helmet so it beats the snot out of me. I am using the 20" CeeBailey which is the clear winner after trying both BMW screens and the 18" CeeBailey. I plan on cutting the sport screen down 1/2 inch and see if that moves the buffet under my helmet, which would be fine for hot weather riding for me.

I think you're right Allan. Hornig is checking into the availability of the GIVI in Germany for me as the Canadian distributor says it is not available here and has no idea as to when it may be available. I also see that GIVI USA lists it on their site but not yet available.
I'd like to try the Cee Bailey as their products tend to get good reviews - I just don't want to buy the BMW hardware to fit the screen on.

Helmut Hornig got back to me this morning and the GIVI should be available the first week of May. Perhaps by then I can squirrel enough away to get the hugger and the shield.

When I got my bike this winter with the small screen I just assumed I would need a larger one. I rode it all day this last Saturday 400 miles or so and found at the end of the day that I had had no wind turbulance issue all day. I still think the bikini fairing like Wudo is going to sell is a great step up in the looks department so I will continue to watch and wait.

Mark, I put some miles on the bike Friday before the weather turned and agree that the airflow is pretty good. Lots of air, with little turbulance but even in the summer the air is pretty cool here riding to work on the highway at 6am. The other thing is bugs...BIG bugs that make a real mess out of riding gear. Had a couple hit me last summer that I swear almost took my full face helmet off. Maybe I'm just getting soft as I get older, but I'm not ready for a full fairing bagger just yet.

I'm not sayong that I wouldn't get another larger windshield but just that I realize I don't need to be as frantic about finding one.
Another point , as long as there doesn't seem to be alot of parts out there for our bike I wonder if many of the parts from an R ST or GS would fit? Which of the parts from the R1200S would be interchangeable? Maybe the Ohlins shocks from one of the bike would work on our bikes?
