Somebody needs to tell this nut that man discovered fire a couple hundred thousand years ago...

They don't call him "bear" for nothing!
He makes Steve Irwin look like a girl.

hey, no cracks about the late, great Steve Irwin.
This guy has a show on how to survive in the wild with basically nothing. Cool show.

I suppose the scales are just another source of fiber, heh? Or do Salmon not have scales?
I've seen that guy's shows. He does get into some tight spots.

It's called sashimi... Spearing it was impressive, but the eating of it? Not so.

You can call Bear Grylls a nut and a dork and any other adjectives that you can think of...... but the truth is that just about every man wishes that they could do that stuff.
To be able to eat live maggots pulled from a rotting deer corpse as if they were popcorn, eat small snakes like gummy worms, repel down a jagged rock water fall on a make shift vine and parachute into treetops?!?!
Come on man. That's damn cool.

I understand but...there is a difference in being a man and displays of grotesque bravado to get attention
I've killed and butchered a pig, rung the necks of several chickens, shot, killed, and slaughtered a few deer, no telling how many dove & quall, and gutted a many a fish and crustation (sp).
But in every case...bare none....I also used heat to cook it !
No wait..there were those raw oysters I use to eat.

I agree with Ric. If I was lost somewhere in the wilderness due to a plane crash, or some unforeseen reason, I would use my brain as much as what my body was capable of. I can eat raw land animals, but do I want to? No. I'd rather learn the different methods that exist for starting a fire so I can cook what I kill. Eating raw fish is second nature to me since I'm Asian-American and I love sushi, but again I'd rather have my options on how to prepare my meal in the wild. Regardless of what I ate, I would prefer to kill it before eating it. What is the point of consuming something while it's still wriggling? For one thing, swallowing something that has teeth - no matter how small, can be dangerous as it can still bite when it's going down your gullet.

I DIG this guy and love to watch him. He is on every Friday night on Discovery.
I loved the one in the Moab where he pee'd on his shirt and wrapped it around his head to stay cool. OMG
He shows us all how to problem-solve and to keep a 'cool head' pardon the pun.
The guys got style.

I like to watch funny stuff too. But isn't that just simple "shock value" stuff for todays discerning viewer.
Eating a live fish or peeing on your head can be full of nasty organisms/bacteria that can kill you if your lost in the woods. It's like drinking spring water without boiling it first, you could get sick as a dog, dehydrate, and then die.
To each his own. I think the guy is an idiot who serves no useful purpose other than laughing at.....and thats slim....

He must be terribly concerned with the high levels of mercury found in fish these days;-)

Actually, and I hate to sound like a know it all, but your own urine is sterile.
Organisms only grow in it once exposed to them.
As for fish...yes, they have organisms...but sushi is a staple in many diets.
If I was lost...I would eat a live fish, worm, bug whatever.....The longer I can live the longer I can ride!! heh heh

I don't see the problem with the guy.
He showed in one episode how there's a species of cactus that you can use as a needle and thread if you need to do an emergency stitch up out in the desert. Why is that macho?
If you're out hiking and get separated from gear, a few handy know-hows could save your arse. I don't think it's machismo. For god's sake, he jumped into an ice hole to show how to get out, get back to your camp and stay warm!
I want to see the 'machos' here do that.

Not macho but I did the same thing, except fell into a creek in January with the temperatures in the teens! What did he do? I stopped right there and built a fire and cranked the stove up for hot soup!
Never seen this show but sounds like a mix of good survival info and show business!
