As the nights are drawing in, I noticed that one (or maybe a couple) of the backlights on my Rock have given up the ghost


Zero - 60/70 is quite clear, but the rest of the clock is a little dim. Not the end of the world, but it's really distracting when I glance down at the clock, and is a bit annoying really

So... Anyone dismantled/replaced them? Easy/Difficult/Impossible?? Any help warmly received!

piece of piss.

eyebrow pops off (regrease the lugs and grommets when you reassmble otherwise you'll pop the grommets out)

undo the two screws either side, then unclip the three clips holding the clocks to the backpiece: these need a bit of figuring out - but any clever person should manage.

then the bulbs should pull out from the back of the clocks fairly easily.

That's what I like to hear !! I'll have a crack at that this weekend; For a (ehem!) intelligent person such as I, shouldn't be a problem

Can anyone confirm if the Rockster has only toplighting for the display?

And RB, if not, how do you get those 3 clips off the back of the cluster in order to access the lower bulbs?!

The Rockster's clocks should be fully lit.
Haven't been in there for a while, but the assembly is a little odd - iirc you have to pull the clocks unit away from it's mounting at a 90 degree direction to the one you think it should go - or something.

I think my top lights are lit but the bottom ones, if they exist, are not.

And I thought as I pulled it apart "why grease the grommets" and then spent 10 minutes fishing two of them out

The spring clips "grab" a circumferential groove at end of each mount post. The clips are removed by pushing at the flat/upturned side to slide the clip across the post end. It's simple once you get the first one off and see the clip construction. But that first clip is a bitch.

There are four backlighting bulbs, two for each gauge, positioned at wacky angles.

I changed my backlight from the OE incandescent bulbs to LEDs. Not better, just different.

Some of the rubber bulb sockets were easy to remove, and others near impossible.

BINGO!!! So easy, rather than push down on that thing just lift it up!!!!!!!!!! AHHHHHHHHH!

What type of bulbs are they, I appear to have one not working.....and will of course go LED and coloured as I'm tacky

I 'think' they're a fairly common bulb.

(unlike the frigging number-plate bulb).

I just ordered some T5 bulbs from ebay for a quid per pack. One of 2 and one of 10.

From the measurements, it looks like they will fit. I am one bulb down so I can test bulbs by just pulling the beak off

News later this month when they arrive.....

FWIW I always find the rev counter impossible to read at dusk and under yellow motorway sodium lights.

gut feeling, RB, is it's an improvement. More light, better colour for night reading. I'll confirm.....and I have a spare set I could let you have.

I switched to these LED's on my FZ1 and it helps if you rough up the end with some sand paper or whatnot to help diffuse the light. Be careful with the type where the LED is sitting right on the end, you can still do it, but go gently.
