Paralever Bearing Adjustment

Has anyone greased and adjusted the paralever bearings on an R1150? I'm talking about the pivot pins that mount the final drive to the swing arm. You know the left side is the adjustable pin and the right side is fixed?

Did you ever think how much easier it would be to adjust if the pins were switched around? That is, the fixed pin on the left and adjustable on the right. That way the wheel could be rocked while adjusting, not to mention the ease of adjusting at a later time becasue the wheel can be left on the bike. Have any of you folks done this and if so how does it work?

rpaul01754,

I have heard of a dealer CRACK a housing while loosening the nut. My guess is too much localized torch HEAT and the cool casting had opposing thermally induced internal stresses built up when the breaker bar was yanked.

Make it easier and safer by scheduling it immediately after a high speed summer heat cruise when the whole assembly will already be very hot. Then add just a little more heat, less than 30 seconds from a full on Propane handheld, circularly directed on the nut to soften the red Loctite.

If you do this and then mount luggage or other brackets on the side of the bike you need to check carefully that the larger adjusting bolt will clear your brackets at all swingarm positions and luggage load conditions. The R100R had this arrangement and contact between the adjuster and saddlebag mounts was not uncommon.
