My Rock decided to throw its starter after 3700 miles. I have owned the bike for three years now and was suprised that the starter gave up the ghost so early.

I have a few other bikes (hence the low low mileage).

Anyway, took the bike to the dealer and was out of warrently by 2 months... LOL. Good thing I decided on the extended warrenty with zero ded.

Dealer replaced the starter and inspected the values and such and I am back on the road with it again.

Just kind of suprised the starter went with soo few starts

Where did you get an extended warranty ? I didn't think BMW sold those for bikes or is it some other company selling the warranty. Sounds like you made the right choice in getting it.

I cannot remember the name of the warrenty company off hand, but you are correct in thinking it was not offered by BMW.

The warrent I got was a Zero deduc on all non-wear parts for 7 years unlimited mileage.

That's about 1233 miles a year ......sounds like you're living up to your name.

Well its kind of hard to find time to ride when:

A) I have a family with a 21month old boy
B) I work for a silicon valley networking company
C) I have 5 different bikes to ride

Maybe the low mileage IS the problem? The bike may have low mileage but your rides were shorter and you had to start & stop more often? I'm just guessing here. But then who knows why some things happen.

How does a bad starter behave? I just replaced my battery ('04 Rock, 18K miles) because it started cranking slowly even though I keep it connected to a tender whenever it's parked. Still after a new battery it cranks slow and won't start. The voltage on the battery shows almost 13V and the system is charging @ 14V so I'm beginning to suspect the starter ($400!). It's making a slow grinding sound which doesn't sound too abnormal but it starts clicking after not too much effort. I guess I could pull it off and test it but I was hoping for a simpler (and cheaper) solution.
