In know this topic keeps coming up on Oilhead boards but no-one seems to give an answer.

My '03 Rockster has a heavy ticking/rattle from the front left of the engine when cold. I know its not important and they all do it  but what causes it?

I have done the engineer trick of placing a screwdriver against the engine and my ear against the other end but I can't define where the noise is actually coming from. Its not the heads/valves I don't think its the timing chains as it comes from the front somwhere.

I know that air/oil cooled engines have to have large clearances for expansion but what is making the tick?????

Does anyone have an answer

yours only ticks when cold? mine does all the time, moreso when it's hot.

and it's really rattles a bit when i first start it cold until the oil flows (after a second or two?)

Just came back from an afternoon highway ride.....ticking all the way :D ...embrace it, get used to it...as I think it's just some strange german engineer's idea of a fun way to drive us all crazy figuring out what it may be...! :?:
