San Francisco was not fogged in, as is usually par for the course on the 4th. Last night was a gorgeous clear night. This was my first ever attempt at fireworks photography. SF put on a very nice display. Hope you all had a good 4th.

I just Googled "fireworks photography" and used some basic info I found.
The basics you need are:
1. Tripod
2. Cable release
3. Figure out the "bulb" setting on your camera, which means you essentially control when you open and close your shutter.
4. At ISO 200 set your aperture to f16.
5. I used a 24-70 wide angle zoom.
Once you've got all that dialed in, find a good vantage point and a stable spot for your tripod. Cable release is convenient so you don't have to constantly be bent over looking through you view finder...
Get the camera focused and frame a shot about where you think the action will take place.
When you hear the launch of a rocket, hit your shutter release - once the rocket has exploded and done it's thing close the shutter. In a perfect world you have just captured one firework. You can try other funky stuff, too, like multiple exposures, using a black cloth to cover the lens between
fireworks volleys...
Try a mix of vertical and horizontal shots. Next time I'll get the Rockster in one of these!

Great shots Toner. Was that at the Marina? About 11 years ago I watched a beautiful fireworks display there.

The fireworks can be seen from the Marina Green, no problem, but they're actually shot off from the Aquatic Park breakwater and a barge that's anchored off of Pier 39. In the 14 years we've lived here only a handful of July 4th's haven't been ruined by FOG.
