Battery charger

Ok, so it happened to me. The battery on my 2003 R1150R died. Deader than a doornail. I was bummed! Regardless, I purchased a new one, and installed it. Installation went well. About 25 minutes, taking my time. No extra screws left over!
Now, what about the battery chargers? I do have the gel battery. Do I need to go with the BMW charger, or can I use something like the 12V Batter Tender?
Thanks for your help!

I just bought an Oxford Maximiser (£25) which has rejuvenated my BMW gel battery. Bike starts much quicker. You can use any sort of battery tender that is suitable for gel batteries, no need to use the official beemer one.

The Optimate III is very good, and works with all types of batteries: normal, gel, AGM etc. You can get a BWM adaptor for it as well, so you can charge your battery throught he accessory port. It has a six stage charge monitoring system and will not cook your battery.
I have had one for a while and it works a treat.

I reckon the Optimate is pretty much an industry standard - can't go wrong.

I have used the Battery Tender for gel batteries on my '04 for a year now with good results.
The Battery Tender is programmed for the gel and I do not know if would work on conventional batteries as well.
No complaints at all.
