Kevin Curran, 12 News,Jun. 4, 2006 09:44 AM
What was supposed to be an end-of-year celebration for teachers at an Ahwatukee school turned to tragedy on the waters of the Colorado River.
The group of 15 teachers from Desert Garden Montessori School was attending an annual retreat hosted by the school’s owner, Shetal Walters, at her Lake Havasu City home. On Saturday afternoon, they went for a cruise on the river aboard Walters’ boat.
The Lake Havasu News-Herald reports the boat collided with at least one other boat south of the Sandbar about 3:30 p.m. Three people suffered serious head injuries in the crash. One is listed in critical condition; the other two are in serious condition.
One person aboard the boats could not be located. A multi-agency dive team searched until darkness and was to return to the river this morning.
A relative of one of the teachers told 12News all 15 spent the night in the Havasu Regional Medical Center. Four of them are scheduled to be released today.
The cause of the collision is still under investigation.

Uninsured unhelmeted boaters pose a social burden to all taxpayers. Imagine how many lives would be saved if all boaters wore a DOT approved helmet!!
