The can is off!

Well, after seeing and hearing ERock's Atlanta Blue beauty w/out a can last Saturday, I took the plunge and have removed my muffler... Man, that thing's heavy! Now to find the proper exhaust tip to finish it up. It will take some getting used to, this motorcycle w/out a muffler, but the way it frees up the back wheel is so cool!
I'll take some pictures once I get the tip - and once I clean my wheels.

I did the same after that ride. Went to local muffler shop, Johnny Franklins, got a tip, 1 3/4" diameter, and they tack welded it on. Great sound and it does look good. The charcoal canister is next.

:smt041 Glad to hear it toner!! You to dcameron. Can't wait to see photos don't think I have ever seen a rockster with out the muffler. What I'm looking for now is a full size case for that side.
Cheapest mod to the bike you can do.

You can buy an RT inner case (for about $50 I think)...drill the rivets..change it over and re rivet...easy peasy... :D

I ended up getting a straight chrome tip for $5, which looks OK, but I'll search around for a turned down tip... Riding around w/out anything on was great! Felt like a real hooligan!

Erock's beautiful bike has been quite an influence...I also took the can off. Love the sound however I'm thinking it has an effect on gas mileage. Seems as soon as I took the can off, my mileage has dropped considerably. Curious to see if any of you experience the same.

DJ - you've had your can off for some time now however do you recall a loss of gas mileage?

I have not noticed any loss in gas mileage...(maybe just a wisker)...I ride mostly around town and city traffic doesn't help to get good fuel economy.

It should be no worse than having an after market can on.

Try one of those those; I've fitted the 54x160, now I'm making one to my own specs, which should give a little more counterpressure.

Looks like my fears of poor gas mileage were unfounded. After 3 tank fillings since losing the can, my average mileage seems to be unchanged. My R is now 13 lbs lighter and sounds sooo much better!

Michael,
That does look sweet! Glad to hear your mileage worries were unfounded.
Where did you find your pipe? I assume that's the original cover thingy that you've got at its base, right? I love the sound of my Rockster now... The slight backfiring during engine braking is kinda fun. It really rumbles, too.

Pipe was $6. at Kragen. I used the "cover thingy" to help break up the transition from the old pipe to the new one.

are you able to remove the can? and if you want to put it back on.... are you able to do so with out having to buy new gaskets??? :?:

Easy off...easy on. Two bolts is all it takes. The 13 lb can slips right off.

Michael:

Thanks for the photos - the r is looking good. I just had the pipe tacked on at the muffler shop. No charge - the owner thought the mod on the bike was soooo cool and he was right. Getting used to the end of pipe just under me, but the bike seems more responsive - better throttle control for my r.

I've had my can off for almost 4 yrs..and I ride two up often...no problem at all...the exhaust and exhaust gas is nowhere near the rear footpeg.

How'd you get the cover thingy to fit upside down? I tried mine and there's no way it will mount that way up! I just fitted a piece chromed straight pipe on and angle cut the end. Had to use my cover thing the normal way round till I get a clamp sorted. Sounds much better!
