Pinging

I have noticed what I think is ocassional pinging coming from my engine when under high-loads. Sort of a super loud tick noise coming from the engine when I twist the throttle too far. It stops as soon as I back off. It seemed to do it more today than it has in the past. I'm not real sure if it is pinging, detonation, or pre-ignition. Or,.. maybe even a cam chain?
I did just put in a tank of gas the other day (Chevron 89) so maybe I just got a bad batch. I also recently adjusted the valves, so I will open it up again tomorrow and re-check.
Any ideas?

It's comon on our bikes...the causes are too low octane...hot weather causes it more..and loading the engine too much (bogging it down)
...put higher octaine fuel in next time and it should fix it...also carbon build up on the piston could also be a cause..
Mine hasn't pinged in years..the other day I put low grade cheaper fuel in and it's started to ping..just a little
....so I popped one of these in the tank..

I believe DJ is correct. Just had the same thing happen to me, used lower grade gas and noticed the under hard acceleration started pinging. Next 2 times I fueled up used 92 oct. and some redlining and no more pinging. I also notice that when I've been riding with my misses on board(ride a little more mellow) it seems to load up and pings a bit until I take it out by myself and put her through some hard acceleration. Just my experiences. Enjoy our nice weather

Yup. Same experience here. Rev regularly over 5.5k rpm and you'll hear it ping less.

It was posted here to use the lowest grade gas which did not ping, so I started using mid-grade (89). It was also posted, higher temps required higher octane to not ping. That appears to be correct. It ran fine all winter on mid-grade, then during a warm run thru Deal's Gap, (in more ways than one), it started pinging and had a loss of power.
Back to high-test for a while.

That was it. I added the octane boost and it wont ping even if I try! Guess I will start buying the full premium grade gas.

What everybody said about the fuel.
I've also been using Sea Foam per another recommendation on this board every 10th tankfull or so to try help keep things clean internally. Don't really know if it helps but I can get away with mid-grade 89 octane at all but the very hotest times of the year.
