Long time lurker, now I could use some advice.

Took my 2004 out of storage last month and it ran great, just wouldn't hold a charge. Took the plunge and swapped out the battery with a new OEM gel (great tank removal instructions on the site, thanks all). Started up strong with the new battery, but...sputtering and low RPM. Did the throttle twist to reset throttle position, but it runs at ~900 RPM with fast idle selected. If I take it off fast idle it sputters and dies. Tried to take it around the block, but it but it bucked and surged and sputtered so badly that it nearly threw me off.

Any ideas on what I could have done and how I can get my baby back to normal?

See if one of your throttle cables got unseated, down by the throttle bodies, when you took the tank off.

Did you hook your gas lines and other hoses back correctly?
Did you make sure that the electric plug was good and tight?

If those two things are correct, I would suspect contaminated gas or a clogged gas filter.

Hi, I just went through this, it was no fun. On my bike, an 04 roady, it was a failed hose clamp on the fuel filter. Fuel seeped around it at anything over idle. drain the fuel and replace the filter and all those damn clamps inside! (See help it is sunny and she wont run...)

I brain farted once after servicing the old BMW battery and forgot to reset the computer with identical symptoms that you described.

Just to be clear, the "throttle twist thing" is suppose to be done after the battery is reconnected and before the engine is started. Since you have already installed the battery, you can go into the fuse box and remove the motronic fuse for about a minute then reinstall the fuse. Turn on the ignition switch-don't start the engine-then give the throttle a couple of complete twists from idle stop to full twist. Turn off the ignition switch. With that done, you have reset the computer and you are good to go.

Unseated throttle cable was the culprit. All is good now. Thanks for all the help.
