I need a quiet full faced helmet!

Does anyone here have a suggestion for a full faced helmet that holds back wind noise well? Even with earplugs, my old Shoei is making me deaf. I plan on doing some riding this summer and don't want to pay for the rest of my life with severe hearing loss.

Supposedly the new Schuberth are claimed to be extremely quiet.

Maybe your Shoei doesn't quite fit your head well? That sometinmes explain the extreme noise. I use earplugs and it helps dampen the noise considerably.

I have two helmets... A Shoei RF1000 and an older Arai Signet... The Arai is the more comfortable of the two, but the Shoei is definitely quieter. Regardless, I use ear plugs on longer rides. If only the Shoei was as comfortable as the Arai...

Where do you live??...I have the BMW sportintegral helmet made for BMW by Shuberth....It's very light and quiet.

Wow, thats a nice looking lid! Sorta has the styling cues of our R's. Do you ride with that helmet? Quiet?! I am in Ohio (USA) and have not seen any like that before, have know of the brand and understand that it's a high priced piece.

There are a lot of good BMW helmets, Schuberth helmets and other European helmets that the US doesn't get because they are not DOT approved. They may be superior in design and protection but they aren't DOT so they're not approved for sales in the US.

If you live in a state that doesn't have a helmet law then you can wear anything you want, including the better Euro spec helmets. But if you live in a state with a helmet law then you must wear a DOT approved helmet, or else you can be ticketed.

Hmmm ... why couldn't I just peel the very official DOT sticker off of one of the "certified" brain bucket helmets that Harley dealers sell?

I guess you could. But that sticker is probably a large part of the absorptive material and structure of the "puddin' bowl" H-D helmet.

I got mine on ebay..about $300 ($200 US)..new in box.

The lady (in England) selling it said her husband had passed away and she was selling his bike gear and he'd just bought it..it was just my size..I was lucky.

I don't mean to bash Harley guys -- some of my best friends ride Harleys -- and I don't mean to hijack this thread, but a funny thing happened the other day. I was washing sawdust off of my bike out on my driveway. My neighbor rides up on his Harley. We were chatting about this and that, and he happened to mention that he likes full face helmets (he had a BMW years ago) but he was trying to get used to the brain bucket that he was sporting. In other words, it seems that he felt compelled to wear that helmet and the goggles just because it was expected with a Harley.

Why bother defacing a good helmet?? Next time you visit a Harley Davidson attended event, (we do, don't we?), seek out a vendor who sells the DOT sticker for several bucks. Another source would be Easy Rider magazine vendor section, if you can get past the topless photos.

Right. My neigbor built one of those custom kit cruisers with a big S&S motor. He simply bought an illegal helmet and slapped a DOT sticker on it. Never mind that I know of at least one local shop that sells scores of small, stupid looking bean pot "helmets" that are DOT approved. I think it was thrilling for him to break the law like that.
Fact of the matter though, in talking with others about this, I've never heard of anyone who actually had a LEO look at his helmet to see if it was legal. If you're wearing that smuggled in Euro styled BMW DJ helmet, I don't think anyone will notice. If you have read any of the Motorcyclist magazine articles on helmet testing you will find there is some controversy on that subject in any case.

I was thinkin....I know, it's dangerous, but I did it anyway.

God forbid you have an accident and the ins. co. investigates and finds out your helmet is non-dot, don't you think they'd wiggle out of paying for your medical? or even worse, your death benefit to your family?

If a cop were to be an a-hole enough, he/she can do it. There are some cops out here in California that will pull you over and write tickets on your aftermarket signals, aftermarket exhaust, aftermarket anything, and yes, even your helmets. I didn't get the tickets because my bike was registered in New Mexico and I wear DOT/Snell helmet, but the other riders in my group got ticketed for the above.

Naturally, if you ride in a non-helmet law state then it's not an issue. You can wear whatever you want there. It pisses me off that I have to ride in a state that makes me wear a helmet YET at the same time doesn't allow me to wear the best helmet made. American safety standards are crap comparing to the European safety standards.

I can't imagine a cop would ever give someone crap about wearing an obviously high quality full face helmet when cruisers are wearing skid-lids. However, if you did something to make the cop mad I'm sure they can find lots of things to ticket.

However, I thought the question about insurance coverage is possibly legitimate. Insurance companies will try to deny a claim for any reason they can.

(I won't Harley bash, but I WILL insurance bash.)
