engine timing cover plug

I'm going to adjust my valves for the first time and the manual it says I should replace my engine timing cover plug with a "real mans plug". I did a search on the net and couldn’t find one. My question is this where can I buy one and is it necessary to replace the old one?

Is it necessary to replace? NO, not unless you lose one. Despite every attempt at being extremely careful (even going so far as attaching a string to my plug so it WOULDN'T fall in), I've dropped TWO of 'em down into the bowels of my machine; been running thousands of miles that way with no apparent ill effect. You don't want to run very far without something covering that hole, though.
Do yourself a favor and get rid of that skimpy, plastic plug that come with your bike, and get thyself to a dealer and ask for a plug from a R1550RT, or, better yet, do as I did and get one from an older airhead. Mine came from an R80RT or something, it's much more stout and more flexible, too. I can't see dropping that one down into the hole. Just ask the parts counter guy to search various models until he finds one in stock.

The stock timing cover plug is a real PITA to work with. The part you want is the Rubber Timing Plug Part # 11-11-1-744-327, aka the he-man plug. Cost is $1.00.
