How long can I expect the 180/55ZR17 and 120/70ZR17 Bridgestones to last on my Rockster ?
I'm 200lbs, always ride alone and am pretty tame (this is my first streetbike). Most of the miles on commuting

Anywhere between 10,000-20,000 klms...(6,000-10,000 miles) would be my guess.

Wow, that is a lot less than the 50,000 miles I get out of a good set of tires on my Chevy truck.
I suppose that bike tires are made from softer rubber due to the traction requirements.
Do you recommend different tires than the Bridgestones that came with the bike when it is time to replace ?

When I had my R I got no more than 3500miles to a set of dunlop d207,s but I later found the shock was knackered so I swapped it & put a pair of metzler z6,s on & what a difference they are a great tyre for that bike & I expected well over 6000m but I swapped the bike before I got to find out.

How do you determine when its time to change them, tread depth ?

I change mine about 3/4 worn. I want the best traction for safety. And I don't just look for long lasting when I buy tires, I look for quick heating, good traction on slick surfaces, great braking charcteristics... metzlers have done me proud, I may put those on when my stock tires wear enough. 27 years riding without a crash, part luck and part paranoia (the cages really ARE out to get me!)

Yeah, get over that. I get 80,000 miles out of the Michelins on my truck but am satisfied with 8,000 out of the Michelin Pilot Road's on my BMW.

Or...when you start to see this...

....it's not canvis...it's the s/s wire threads...new tires are very tough.

Depending on which tire. My Rockster originally came with Metzler Sportec M1 and the rear lasted around 5000-miles. I'm not hard on the gas for acceleration so my rear tires get good mileage. The current Z6 Roadtec rear is at 6500-miles and probably would go another 2000-miles. The Z6 front is at 11500-miles and still going strong.
The Z6 rear that I put on with the front got punctured by two nails when it barely had 5000-miles on it. Hence the difference in mileage between the front Z6 and the current rear Z6.
My Aprilia Tuono wears Pirelli Diablos and the rear went at around 4200-miles as well. The front is still good at 6500.
