. . . which I think is great! I'd like to see more guy's customizing their BMW's other than windscreens and luggage. I used to have a Ducati Monster and that was a big part of the fun: making it mine. 8) Check out the Ducati Monster List sometime.

The images DJ posted a while back of the red and yellow customized bikes really got me thinking(thanks DJ  ). I was all ready to sell my R and buy something different, however ,now I've decided to keep it instead: I love the bike when I'm on it - I just don't like the way it looks. So I'm thinking about something like this maybe:

It wouldn't be too hard - the tail would be a custom fiberglass job utilizing the existing taillight assembly, but would be close to the K1200R. Unfortunately living in Florida there's no winter to do these sorts of mods. I'll have to fab stuff in "bolt-on" sections for a quick transformation. It could also be put back to stock when the R1200R comes out!

Whata ya think?

Hey Buz,

Nive looking rendering. You and Psyko need to hook up as it looks like you are attempting about the same thing. I've got the headlight bucket he'd need to do that front treatment on a GS. You are starting from an R and migrating towards the GS and he is contemplating the opposite. You might share some parts or "engineering" effort. I have done some of this as well with GS rear suspension, footpegs, foot controls, side and centerstands on my R. I haven't fully engineered the front suspension yet, but it will have a lift to GS height without upsetting the telelever geometry. Probably with GS Adventure (longer) fork tubes and a custom built ball joint mounting bracket. The smaller R-R wheel loses an inch to the GS plus whatever length difference exists between the axles and the respective mounting points for the ball joint brackets.

Bobbed tail

Post by MikeCam »

A few minutes with a Dremel or hacksaw can achieve a pretty radically bobbed tail and preserve the taillight. Gets very close to what you want--

Go look at your bike right now. We'll wait.

There, could you imagine where to cut and how to get the look you are after?

MikeCam: yes your'e right: thanks for giving a minute to catch up :D

The painted plastic side panels have to go! But I can see where I might be able to salvage the existing black plastic bit.

beemerphile: I wish I could lay my hands on some second hand 1100S sliders, I like the "machine" look of them. Instead, I have access to some metal working stuff (cnc, waterjet) so I was thinking of making a fork brace that would cover the ball joint somewhat and also breakup the line of the slider.

I just got back from a meeting on the R. I love this bike - I can't see getting anything else right now. As soon as the shop is done she'll be going under the knife: prolly early spring . . ..

Check out the new office (with shop) here:

Yes, 1100S or Rockster sliders. To buy them is close to a kilobuck. The fork brace is the ball joint mount. Building one of those from scratch is part of my plan. I am not so worried how it looks as it will be a bit obscured by my fairing - might as well make it elegant though. I am looking at ride height. I have mold and die shop access so it's just programming a bit of material once I decide how to build it. - Lee

Well Jbuz, it's rare I see a modified bike that's an improvement on the original but that I like. I have a Rox, so the front end is almost there [just the mudguard to sort]. The left hand side of the Rox looks good without the plastic bodywork [under the seat] but the right has a load of wiring bits to hide elswhere. Then there's just the "bobtail" to sort [shame we have to mount the licence plate].

Thanks for the excellent idea :D
