I agree with PAT there's better places for that kind of speed !

Hmmmmmmm... Well, then you better never watch any video of the Isle of Man TT races!

Guys are going 170-180 MPH there in between stone walls and trees right *NEXT* to the roadway... and on cobblestones with street lamp posts, etc. lining their way... Not to mention thousands of spectators standing within feet of the course!

Life is not for the squeamish...

But you're right... Speeding is illegal, and very, very wrong... None of us should ever exceed the posted speed limits, and if we didn't then none of us would ever get traffic citations, right?

People who get traffic citations are obviously breaking the law, and endangering people's lives when doing so.

There's no one on this board who has ever had a bunch of traffic tickets, is there?

And certainly any of those who have incurred any of those types of traffic citations and speeding violations wouldn't be suggesting that others shouldn't be speeding, even though they have... and do... still break the law by speeding themselves, right?

I wouldn't suggest that.
As I sit here totally wasting a perfectly good Saturday taking a stupid on-line Defensive Driving Course.
To get a(nother) ticket speeding ticket dismissed.

Damn Speed Triple...it's all "Hoochie Mama's" fault.
I didn't do it.
I wasn't even there.
And I promise to never do it again!

Well, I will have to side with Pat on this issue against our other esteemed board members. As one who has been to the traffic school also and done some speeding occationally (only occationally mind you! ), I think that ride was irrresponsible riding. Not the speed, but the location. Too many intersections and driveways for 170. Shoot, I live in the mountains and I could find a better road for that than what they were riding!

At 170 a crash with someone could be fatal to the people in the cage also. Stupid stunts that kill the rider are one thing. Grandma shouldn't have to pay the price if her reflexes can't handle a bike coming around the curve at 170.

To be quite serious, in many ways I couldn't agree with you more. I just find it a tad bit... just a tad, mind you... disingenuous when some posters seem to come down hard about excessive speed. Particularly when some of those posters have often posted about their speeding exploits, excessive number of traffic citations, other riding exploits equally senseless as the guy going 170, etc.

It reeks rather rancidly of "Don't do as I do, do as I say...", don't you think?

It's akin to admonishing others for supposedly "boasting" about their riding ability when all too often it has been the admonisher boasting about his own riding exploits...

I dunno'... To each his own, I guess... I guess to me there is nothing more falsely "high and mighty" than a reformed anything.

But those are someone else's *issues*...

People on this board really need to lighten up and learn to spot tongue-in-cheek humor.
I would ride a motorcycle 170 at Bonneville and a few isolated West Texas roads I know, under the right circumstances. No grannies either place. And I wouldn't do it where there were. But I might joke about it.

I'm not getting in the middle of anything between Pat & Allan but geeze, I picked up pretty quick the analogy of 170 at Isle of Mann vs granny's country lane was just that. Of course that vid ride was irresponsible. And criminal and really, really stupid & dangerous.

I get that. I think it's safe to assume we all do on this board.

Strikes me as more PC gone rampant.

But back to the point of the thread...

Let's face it, folks - We have *ALL* done stupid, dangerous things on motorcycles... At least I am *DAMN* sure that I have, along with both Darth and Pat (if they will admit it...). Rounding blind corners on twsity roads at two and three times over the posted limit is not exactly safe.

For instance, Dean and I stayed flat out and tucked in for *MILES* out on the Big Bend ride, and some of those times there were side roads, mailboxes, etc.... Not to mention plenty of potential four-legged obstacles. Now, my R-1150-R will go close to 130 on a good day... and we know Dean's ST will go over 140 MPH, right? The only thing that kept either one of us from going faster than those speeds was the bikes wouldn't od any more!

Oh, and some of that time was when my rear tire was already toasted to the cords...

If we had been on mounts that would have gone 170 MPH I am sure we would have spent some time there, most definitely.

Hence, I'm afraid it would be quite hypocritical of me to slam some guy who video taped himself going an indicated 170 MPH for what amounted to about 5 or 10 seconds...

Likewise, I think it is pretty disingenuous for some other posters here to do the same... Especially after years and years of hearing of all their exploits of daring-do and traffic citations for speeding. Of course, like I said, perhaps some revel in the practice of "Don't do as I do, do as I say" however ridiculous that stance may be.

Just my two pesos... YMMV.

Dallara - I was being neither disingenuous nor hypocritical in my post. If I ever get to ride with you and Dean, I would be far behind I suppose! I am a slow rider compared to you guys. So as a chicken, I do not deserve those labels. Yes, I have been known to exceed the speed limit. Well, actually, almost constantly! But I was referring to the degree with which the video exceeded what I consider safe bounds. If the road had less drives and intersections, I would have enjoyed the video and posted nothing, as usual. But it appeared to be a pretty populated area and could have endangered others, which is not good for any of us. That was my point. I have no intention of lecturing anyone. Except my boys of course.

I have never seen you bragging about your riding exploits at high-speed nor the huge number of traffic citations you have, or how you had to try and get a slower bike because you just rode *TOO* fast on one you had, etc. like one of our posters.

It was this one, specific poster I was referring to... No one else.

My apologies if you felt anything was aimed at you. It wasn't, I assure you.
