Last week I had a new rear tire installed by the local dealership. I noticed a vibration above 60mph so I took it back to be rebalanced. They called and said the wheel was bent and that a new wheel would be $550. I hadn't hit any extraordinary bumps and there was no problem until the new tire was installed. I felt like I was getting my ying-yang pulled.

When I went to the shop and they put it on the balancer, sure enough there was a slight 1/16" horizontal wobble. So my question is, can the wheel be fixed, or is the only cure to replace it?

Yes, wheels can be trued. But 1/16" is nothing and localized do not worry about it.

When you get to 1/4" it needs attention. Often this is not felt either if the wheel is properly balanced - the tire conforms to its shape. Costs are about $125 -200 depending on where it is done.

Balance is more critical. Seldom do shops re-calibrate their machines if they were using the electronic spinner type. 1/4oz out at 90mph equals a 5lb out - and that is felt! For this reason I do my own balancing. Shops often do not care about the finer detail and the Joe doing the balancing is on minimum wage.
