Final Drive flush

I changed the fluids on my low mileage 02 R1150. The final drive drain plug was covered with an inklike film. The gear oil itself looked good. I cleaned the plug and refilled with fresh oil. I was wondering where this film came from and should I be worried. No oil leaks any where....

That is completely normal. Always check for metal shavings. I use a screen colander to drain the oil so I can check for shavings.

Ok. It’s just that I don’t remember having this film on my last fluid change and my trans plug was clean. No metal shavings at all so I’m feeling good. Thanks!

STOP babying that bike...live free and ride HARD and then you can enjoy metal shavings on your magnetic plugs like the rest of us...

As long as you don't drain it to find it looking like metal soup (meaning a new final drive!), you are fine.

Been there, done that.

And if that happens and you hear the dreaded graunching sound when you turn the back wheel in neutral whilst the bike's on its centre-stand....
Here's a lovely hour-long vo-di-oh-di showing how to restore the bearings situation to new.

And James is on the list thanking this US guy for his explanation of why the microwave in the kitchen is an essential tool to help you refit bearings - as James says, "Temperature Difference is Your Friend". One half of the bearing heated in a wet cloth in the micro., and the other half deep-chilled in the freezer, means that the re-fit of the new bearing ring is kushtie.
