Avoiding a dangerous road race but still walk away with your pride

The other day I'm riding down the express lanes and on the other side of the barrier I noticed a dude on a race bike swirling his finger around towards me.
At first I thought this was his version of a friendly biker-to-biker wave so I waved back.
He did it again and this time I just nodded my head.
He takes off flying as he weaves through reasonably heavy traffic then slows down up ahead and waits for me to catch up which doesn't take long since I'm in the express lanes which are moving.
He looks over at me again so I just flex my bicep and point to it.
First time this has happened in 2600 miles of riding.
The question is, rather than going through all this, is there an easy gesture that says "I don't want to race because it's abnormally dangerous but at the same time I do not concede that you are the alpha here".
