Yet another Heated Grips thread....yawn.

There remains one final issue to solve, regarding my handlebar changeover project, converting from the awful straight Rockster bar to the far comfier R roadster bar with more lift and better-angled bar ends.

It's the Heated Grips Switch wiring.

The Motorworks used roadster bar is waiting for me in the UK alongside the Rockster, snoozing on a battery monitor in the rented motor engineers' storage facility. But before I get there in a fortnight's time, I can't seem to find out the wiring layout between the under-tank white connector for the left and right grips, and the throttle-side HG switch - off,semi, full.

One slight complication is that my factory-issue BMW Repair Sequences DVD is back in the UK, and currently ( geddit ? ) the Rockster HGs don't actually work, but I should be able to sort that out with the aid of the estimable Chris Harris's HG wiring repair U-Toob vids. Complete with all his 2006 blankety-blank swearing, which doesn't seem to have been modified by his awful recent cancer scare.

There seems to be loads of info about the switch wiring on every Beemer bike, EXCEPT the oilheads, judging by what I can find after hours of web-browsing. All the other bikes' HG wiring has been refined since the manufacture of the year-04 R-roadster, Rockster, GS and RT 1150cc 6-speed hydro-actuated-clutch bikes.

When I get to the UK I'll just have to go carefully and pull the bars apart to check all the wire-colours to see where they all go. I'm guessing it'll be a bird's nest of a job, judging by the amount of ham-fisted farkling that's gone on beforehand. It's a smashing bike to ride, though, and surely worth putting the bar situation back in order with a comfier set-up and working heaters, assuming I ever use the bike in cooler temps.

When I solve the issue and then proceed to ( or "go ahead and" as you guys say ) swap over the awful straight Rockster bar for the much more comfortably-angled Roadster bar, I'll provide a U-Toob or Vimeo 'How To' video, which may help somebody...

Update - what a balls-up. When I got to the Rockster in the UK in late July, I pulled the r/h grip assy off the bar - what a job - to discover that a P.O. had simply lobbed off the long wire leading from the handlebar grip heating coil, and had sealed the end going down to the connector under the tank with Elastoplast - that's right, the stuff you wrap round your cut finger. They hadn't even separated or isolated the bare ends of the black & brown wires, so presumably the wire was disconnected from the under-tank socket, otherwise there'd have been a blown fuse. Same snip-job on the other grip - with a similar inch of Elastoplast, but this time leaving the long wire flapping in the breeze. ¿ Who are these bozos ?
The heating coils on both grips tested open-circuit on the meter.

Since I'll only ever use the Rockster for summer trips during my annual UK hols., I simply made up the ends correctly, not even lifting the tank to see whether the wires were connected to the invisible 4-way block connector, and ziptied them nicely out of the way. So now I still have a permanently non-heated-grips bike. Sod it.

However, the 2-hour job of swapping over the horrid straight Rockster bar for the nice'n'comfy-curvy R1150R roadster bar has resulted in a much more relaxing ride posture. And I also sourced a complete used GS footrest and levers kit from James Sherlock Ltd in Molton, Devon ( loadsa used parts for our bikes - almost as good as MW in Yokkshurr ) at a knockdown price.

So when I swap out the knee-crunchingly high Rockster footpegs on my next UK visit at Christmas, for those lower GS bits, all will be completely kushtie. And the lowered rests will stop me leaning so far over.....
