Start Procedure after battery disconnect

I recently shipped my R1150R to Costa Rica. When I get there I will be picking it up from the warehouse where it is being stored now. I recall reading in the Clymer manual that there was something I needed to do when I reconnect the battery to get the bike to come properly back on line. Unfortunately the manual was packed somewhere other than on the bike and may not be available immediately. Can someone with a manual look up the procedure for reconnecting the battery and perhaps scan it and send it to me on the forum? I expect to be going to CR on July 21st and will need the bike for transportation for a while till we are settled in and have bought a car. Thanks

Turn the key to the run position, slowly open the throttle to the stop bring it back to idle .

I don't know if you need to turn the key to the off position after this or not, I do, then turn the key on and start the engine .

Riverside,
That is correct, but you also need the kill switch ON with the tranny in Neutral, so the Motronic ECU gets its 12V power. The reason you do the stop-2-stop slow throttle twist is to feed the Motronic the ThrottlePositionSensor's (TPS) electrical resistance values for the full range of twistgrip travel.

Not sure what you mean by the kill switch being "on". Do you mean that it's set so the engine can't run?
I'll try that procedure when I understand the methodology.
Always good to learn, thanks.

gregor,
I've heard it said that the USA and the UK are 2 English speaking countries separated by a common language.
Yeah, it may seem confusing, the slang definitions of the Emergency CutOff Switch, and when translated literally you are correct -but- the end of that same sentence said "so the Motronic ECU gets its 12V power". That would mean the Stop-Run-Stop 3 position Kill Switch would be in the middle position. I guess I should have said "Run" instead of "ON". [-(

BTW, You can also start the engine directly from the throttle twist TPS calibration procedure. You may also notice that engine braking deceleration will be weaker for several minutes of riding until the battery reconnect default fuel map is "trimmed" leaner by the O2 sensor to optimal values (if yours is connected). On most ECU EFI systems that is about 20 minutes continuous driving in excess of 35 MPH (as stated in the 1998 Nissan Frontier shop manual).

ha! I had a 98 frontier. loved that truck. have the shop manual on it. I even remember that particular part. bought the manual After I soaked the distributor giving the engine a bath, and experienced some foul running. :)

So a 'cut off' switch is OFF when its ON. Gotcha. :)
I have been to the USA and did get confused with the wall mounted light switches. Unlike the UK, the down position is off.
Oh and we don't put gas into our vehicles here. We keep that for our cooking stoves. Don't try that at home folks.
Fun being a tourist where the language is almost the same. =D>

As I have lived many places on the planet in my time, that made me laugh gregor!!!

That stop run switch to "on" gave me a puzzled pause and I'm a fluent USA speaker.

Bravo!

:-)

Finally got settled here and internet installed. Thanks everyone for the input and an additional thanks for the Grammer lesson. :) . I have been here for just over a month in Costa Rica and due to circumstances I still have not taken delivery of my beloved Maxine. Now when I do I will be sure to follow the procedure. I expect her to arrive this coming week. And bonus, our landlord is a BMW rider on a 2007 R1200R GS. He is a long time ExPat from Germany and plans to show me the good riding roads here when she arrives. Looking forward to some new adventures here is Costa Rica. Also looking into really good rain gear since I now live in the rain forest.

This is just a follow-up to my original question. Thanks again for the input. I turned on the ignition, left the kill switch in the position that allows the bike to start :) and turned the throttle twice through its full range. Then took Maxine out for her first Costa Rican run of about 80KM. Early stalling was the result of not pulling the start lever up before is was sufficiently warm. I'm glad to report everything went fine that day. A few things after that day but overall I've had no serious trouble. I will find getting parts here to be a challange, but, am working through that. I have another post now about shock absorbers if any of you have suggestions.

Hey Gregor......Over here we put the coolant in the driver side radiator on the R. Which side do you guys use over there? Driver or passenger?
