When I accelerate briskly (i.e. give it full throttle) the engine seems to die for a second or so (as if it totally ran out of fuel)., it goes full throttle for about 1 second, then dies for about 1/2 a second, then starts pulling again. If I accelerate w/ 75% throttle (or less), this does not happen.

I will change my fuel filter and all the hoses in side the tank. Hopefully this will address this issue. Any other things that I should look into??

Year, odometer, single or dual spark?

It is a 2002 w/ 31K miles & single spark. I just bought the bike a month ago & am still vetting out issues.

BTW, I hope that I can get away w/not doing anything for another month or two then really get after ALL the maintenance items (including the clutch spline lube).

How long has this been happening? Did it just happen suddenly or after service or did it creep up on you?

curious one there....does it idle ok?

we have the same model. motronic could be outta whack. recalibrate it.

try: pull the motronic fuse (#5) for awhile. OR disconnect batt. 15min+ then put motronic fuse back in and, (turn key and do the full throttle crank ALL THE WAY TO STOP slowly 3 times) then go ride. see if its different....

during the reset, IF you have a cat code plug in, could try and remove it-this will make fuel map full rich. mitigated my throttle "surge" under no load in high gears. Still there but noticeably different.


worst case...could be vacuum/intake leak? fairly certain its fuel or air. doesnt sound like ignition at all.

The bike is 13 years old. I say the fuel filter is too clogged up to pass full throttle flow. The symptoms you describe are exactly that. By the odometer reading my guess is that it has never been replaced. It is as likely to be gummed up by old fuel breakdown as by rust particles. The factory one time use fuel clamps could tell you the owner did Not not replace it. You could also have one of the in-tank hoses leaking fuel pressure or partially clogged fuel injector nozzles.

Also change the air filter and check that a mouse or whatever has not partially blocked up the intake with bedding or food.This could be drawn into the filter under full throttle. An easier diy job than the fuel filter replacement (which I left to the dealer).

I just got the bike, and do not know if the problem crept up on the previous owner or not.

It idles fine. Pulling battery/fuse for recalibration is periodically not a bad thing to do, so I will do that but do not expect this to be the cause.

I agree w/ you 100%. Even if this is not the root cause, it needs to be done. I was hoping to get another couple of months out of the bike, but, at this point do not know. I hate doing things twice, & if I pull the tank now for this, I will still be pulling it again for the clutch spline lube in a couple of months. Hopefully the injectors are not clogged, but then again, the place to start is w/ the fuel filter.

Will definitely do this, but, the bike does not act like a plugged up air filter.

You can check all the tank innards by setting up the fuel returning from the fuel distributor to collect in a tank. In one minute at idle you should collect 2 liters. If you do, all is good--hoses, pump and filter. If the test is a lot less than two liters I'd suspect the in-tank hoses.

What year and model do you ride? Which color coding plug is installed?

It is a 2002 R1150R. What is the color coding plug? BTW, there is a Dobeck performance fuel injection performance TFI module on it & a aftermarket exhaust. Not sure if this is causing any issues or not.

I had a similar behavior, and it turned out 1 of my coil sticks was going bad.
It would surge over 4k rpm.... and the bike would buck like a horse with a spur in its side.
Would not shut off, just lunge up and down...


Turned out, the right side coil stick was starting to fail.
