My original front brake lines finally bit the dust, of course I'm way overdue to replace them at almost 70K miles. (Me=idiot: huh, you have to replace those? Learning is fun!)

How it happened: On the trip home from Sturgis yesterday a small puncture blew in the right brake line. Luckily I was close enough home to get the bike back to my garage by McGuyver-ing a fix with teflon tape and cable clamps. (An old moto-magician in my group gets the credit for the road fix.)


For replacements, I'm looking at the Spiegler ss kits.

These are the two options I've found for my non-ABS 2002 R1150R:

1. Original: these are labelled as original routing with 4 lines:

2. Alt: these are $20 bucks cheaper, and 3 lines. Not a lot of additional information beyond that:

My question is: Has anyone used the "alt" kits or know anything about the kit product/installation that could help? (If there's a way to go simpler I'm inclined to go with that – of course I'd be going off-book so I'm not sure what to expect in installation).

Recently, I replaced a rear brake line with a Galfer steel braided line on my 02. I got them from Tim at Pashnit web site. He's a good guy. They were (for the rear anyway) 40% less than Speigler, they are made is USA and everything feels very good quality. Also and very importantly, everything fit absolutely perfectly.

I replaced the front brake lines on my '02 non-ABS bike with Spiegler's SS 4-hose (original, p/n S-BM0133) brake lines in 2011 and had these two problems:
1. I initially received a too-long crossover line that connects between the "T" union (above the right caliper) and the left caliper because my bike has a metal brake line that runs behind the beak to make this connection...I guess some bikes don't? Mattius at Spiegler immediately sent the correct replacement and paid for shipping the incorrect line back.

2. The "T" union that Spiegler sent was a tad too long to fit in the bike's bracket, but a few swipes with a file fixed that.

I remember reading at the time (2011) that Galfer lines were not DOT certified, but I think they since have been.

The Speiglers were not too difficult to install (I unmounted the purge valve under the tank to make it easier, and to bleed the system) and provide a noticeable improvement in brake response and lever feel over the old rubber lines.

Does your '02 have ABS? Looks like a great option, but I'm having trouble finding the kit for non-ABS.

So I got a reply back from Sportbike Track Gear on the original vs. alt:

"there is no performance gain with the ALT it over the standard routing. All it does is eliminate the junction box on the rear fender. All of there its do come with detailed instructions as well."

I installed the Spiegler 4 line kit on my '02 R, non-ABS about 2 and a half years ago .
No issues what so ever with the kit .
Replaced the rear brake line at that time as well .
Spiegler has a life time warranty on their parts .
My front brake line also failed in the same way as yours did .
When you turn the handlebar to the left and lock the fork, that line has tension on it .To get a bit more service life from the line, lock the forks to the right .
If you still have the OEM rubber brake lines, I would encourage you to replace them .
