Take the seat off our bkes and we see the MoDiTeC terminal. As part of a dealer service they are supposed to interrogate the fault code memory.

As someone who has a budget where they prefer to service the bike myself, I find I can do all parts of the service apart from check for stored fault codes.

Is there a way for the home mechanic to interrogate the fault store like we can on many other bikes and cars?

Just go to your dealer and have them read the code and give you a print out, minimal charge.

I hoped that the minimal charge would be nowt.
And be able to be performed at home in my garage.

perhaps someone has already looked into this already.

Further to my R1150R, is it true that the new bikes like the R1200ST have a system wher a light pops up when a service is due and the only way to turn it off is to take it to the BMW dealer?

Their comprehensive maintenance guide has a section devoted to building a code reader, which is both easy and cheap.

R1150RDave, on the new R1200 series bikes, the answer is no, however on the new K bikes, the answer is yes, at least to the valve adjustment.

I found the mentioned code reading procedure. It's for R1100 engines with Motronic 2.2 , prolly not too unlike our version 2.4 Motronic. It's explained in detail on page 71 of this Maintenance manual:

I'll have fun in the garage with my old analouge meter.

Oh dear. when I took the cover off the moditec terminal I cant find which is pin 1. there are 10 sockets with 5 sockets occupied with pins and wires.

How do they number? does anyone know? or can the wire colours help?
