It was a good effort on your part, but, sadly, not quite good enough.

Better luck next year!

=D> Well played England. =D>

A deserved win over a very good team that had been lead to believe they were better than they were. Steve Waugh instilled some arrogance that needed to be wiped from their faces, and you did it.

Consider it a present from us to you; something for the national psyche; something for you to crow about...until the next time

Thanks, Boxerboy. You are a true sportsman.

It has done the national psyche good. That, the rugby, hosting the Olympics in 2012 have all been good for morale.

As indeed, and maybe not so strangely, has the reaction to the London bombings of 7/7. I think that the way Londoners dealt with it, as did our emergency services, has given the Brits some sense of spirit and pride.

Good can come out of the worst of adversity.

But I have to say that Shane Warne was, for me, the outstanding player of the series. On form, he's unplayable. Off form he's merely brilliant.

I find it kind of amusing that there are the super-fit fast bowlers working out in the gym every day with long, long run-ups, max effort, etc, etc.

And then there is Warne. 35 years old, a little overweight, smokes, drinks, parties, a run-up of about 3 steps and a devastating delivery.

Sad it was his last Test series here.

The local papers have Warne saying he'll play the next Ashes series here, late 2006.
Gillie seems set for the 2007 WC.
McGrath I don't know.

Warne gets plenty of aerobic exercise it seems :)
Great bowler, utter twat. Most Aussies I know would describe him so.

If he was a better "role model", (don't ya hate that term?) he'd've been Captain, and would still be Captain.

Punter is OK, but he wouldn't have the job if Warne didn't have a mobile phone and a vain streak.

Good can come out of the worst of adversity.

So Jonothan, do you think that I should put a fiver on England for the '06 World Cup in Germany. It seems like the footballers are at a low.

Yes, mate, I think they're worth a punt.

England are actually their own worst enemies when it comes to sporting psychology. Can they put together a world class team? Yes, I believe they can. Can they actually go on to win? Yes, I reckon they've got as good a chance as anyone next year.

A "fiver"? Spoken like a true Brit! You are clearly used to our colloquialisms! :)

As per the "Brits revoke US independence" post: first I got out the dictionary to look up colloquialism; then I tried to say it - and failed, then I figured out you were talking about some kind of baseball and soccer; still I don't understand a word you are saying; #-o so, I hope you Brits realize it's hopeless taking us back! We are, sadly, irredeemable. (I looked that one up too.) But congratulations on whatever the heck you are talking about. :)

Aww, I'm sorry Kevin.

If I type more slowly, would that help?

Cheers, mate!

Jonothan,
The wise bet on England would be a semifinal loss to the Germans on penalties.

I actually still have a fiver in my billfold from my time in the UK in '96. Seeing a match in Wembley was an extraordinary experience(even if it was the Charity Shield).
