Hey guys. Just bought an 04 RR in JUne and I am really concerned about protecting the heads. I want to cover them before I regret it. I'm looking at the stanton headguards and the Wunderlich bars. Any opinions on this. Money is not really an option. Also, how can I order Wunderlich products. I saw an excellent German catalog, I wonder if there is one in English...TIA....Vinny

If you go to their website, you can request a free english catalog. I wouldn't go with the stanton's cause I think they're ugly and the bars may be a bit over the top. What about the BMW valve cover protectors, I use these and they've worked find.

The stantons are deffinitly one step above the plastic cylinder head covers...

but I'm saving my money for the wunderlich bars. They compliment the lines of the bike well... plus they have mounting points for fog/running lights is just the right place!

(it's said that you should have the aux lights low and wide to creat the "triangle of light" which allows other drivers to figure closing distance easier).

I have the Wunderlich engine guards. I had Hella lights mounted on them. The guards work great the Hella's are a POS.

I'm mounting a "test" pair of lights on them, even as we speak. They are from a well known manufacturer. As of now, there are only three sets made. One on the owner of the company's machine, one set on the rear of the trailer they take to bike rally's, and mine.

If they work out I'm sure you will hear about it, from me if nothing else. They are designed for "choppers" but they look good mounted on the guards.

New valve covers are cheaper than the various devices to protect them!

Unless you want a place to hang some lights.

The cost of the replacement covers is less - true. However, I've heard of people getting a hole in the cover and not being able to ride home.

My problem is I'm built way too close to the ground. For taller riders the chance of dropping the machine is less.

Stantons are superb, and protect the upper part of the valve cover which the BMW covers don't - I"ve seen many BM's fitted with the GS protectors with damage to the valve covers after simple low-speeds drops. Stantons would have prevented this damage.

I have the Wunderlich engine guards in Black (also available in silver) to match the engine with PIAA 1100X lights mounted on them. The guards work well , but you may want additional protection for the valve covers. The BMW guards should work well, because the guards will take the direct impact but will not protect from the sliding damage. I chose them because the matched the lines well with out the offroad bar look. Maximum protection would be the Hepco-Becker bars with hoops on either side of the heads, but adds a lot of bar to the bike. Santa Cruz BMW is the US distributor of Wunderlich they had a nice booth at Lima. I can send/post a jpeg of the bars with the lights if interested.

Never down, but scraped on both sides on a track day; can't see the scrapes when mounted unless you get on your knees to look. Don't you have duct tape with you at all times!

Cost be damned, I would like a pair of Statons but have other things to buy first.
