I got this off another website, so I'd suggest for our Texican friends to confirm with the cops and DMV first:

BE IT ENACTED BY THE LEGISLATURE OF THE STATE OF TEXAS:
SECTION 1. Section 545.060, Transportation Code, is amended by
amending Subsection (a) and adding Subsection (e) to read as follows:
(snipped some non-motorcycle stuff.)

(e) The operator of a motorcycle may operate the
motorcycle for a safe distance between lanes of traffic moving in the same
direction during periods of traffic congestion if the operator:
(1) is at least 21 years old;
(2) has successfully completed a motorcycle operator
training and safety course under Chapter 662;
(3) is covered by a health insurance plan providing the
operator with at least $10,000 in medical benefits for injuries incurred as
a result of an accident while operating a motorcycle; and
(4) operates the motorcycle:
(A) at a speed not more than five miles per hour
over the speed of the other traffic;
(B) in traffic that is moving at a speed of 20
miles per hour or less; and
© in a location other than a school crossing
zone or other than a location where the posted speed limit is 20 miles per
hour or less.
SECTION 2. This Act takes effect September 1, 2005

It has not yet even made it to the point where it can pass or not. It died in committee like 99% of other bills proposed this session.
Was a bill that never passed...

OOOH - I'm getting all tingly thinking about that allowed 5 mph faster than the cars going 20 or below. Maybe it will pass committee if they allow you to get off & push it, and require organ donations.

Remember, its not lane splitting, its lane Sharing!

The Texas Legislature never considered it this past session so its not legal yet (if ever). Several threads on the Two Wheel Texans (twtex.com) board about it.

Cheers,

just what Texas needs, more opportunity for ignorant, lazy, Suburban-drivin', phone-talkin', web-surfin', make-up applyin', negligible cage operators to cream me. No thanks. I'll be WAAAAAAY ahead of them.
I don't see lane splitting as a positive thing, and when I lived in LA, it was only worth the risk when the 405/101/10/5 was absolutely crawling. And even then, there was always some knucklehead opening his door to stand up & look ahead....

I'm with Collyers on this one!
Just because we can (maybe/someday...doubt it), doesn't mean we should.
The whole idea gives me the heebie jeebies.
I do admit this (strong) opinion comes from intuition, not experience. I just don't like to get closer to cages than I have time & space to avoid them should they do something stupid.
But we all know cagers never o anything stupid!
Probably if I had to travel on the California freeways I've seen though, I'd just grit my teeth and do it.
It does look like fun!
