Okey Dokey..


Last weekend I pulled the tank on my 04' to swap the battery. I followed the direction that I was pointed to and the process seemed to go smoothly. Even the fuel line disconnect and reconnect went pretty easy. New battery is in a all is well.. So I thought.

Now however there is a problem. When riding there is a a chugging/hesitation. A slow roll on the throttle avoids it, but cracking the throttle (to pass or merge for instance) and the bike starts to go, then hes hes hes hesitates, then goes. Even at that point it is certainly not as smooth as it was.

So.. what might I have done? Do I need to reset the ECU after removing the battery? Did I pinch something?

sigh.. help!

It no better at high rev either. So kicking it down a gear to pass doesn't help..

Symptoms sound much like those you get when a stick coil goes south.

Please explain (for this rookie) the stick coil.. Or is there a place online with details and pics?

Thank you..

Isn't there a throttle reset procedure after you disconnect the battery ??
I was told, that after reinstalling the battery, turn the key to the 'ON " position, then slowly open the throttle, hold it open for a few seconds then slowly close it .
Anyone hear of this procedure ???

You need to ride for a tank or two of gas for the Motronic to re-establish the base fueling map based on TPS and other factors. Don't agonize over it - just be patient.

1. Motronic reset occurs any time you remove the battery power. Pulling Fuse #5 is superfluous if you have changed the battery.
2. The procedure is to turn the key on, leave engine off. Fully twist throttle to full stop and release 2 or 3 times. This sets a mechanical-electrical relationship for the Motronic to use as a baseline.
3. On reassembly of the bike after replacing battery (or any under tank efforts) insure the fuel lines are properly reconnected, vent and return hoses correctly assembled, throttle cables fully seated. and all connectors reconnected.
4. Moving the tank can cause residual gas crud to foul the fuel filter or various inside the tank hoses may be jostled out of place. Another headache, but not a crisis - simply recheck everything.
5. Lesser potential problems: air filter housing fully seated and snorkel properly reinstalled; spark plug covers still properly seated (underlying caps, coils, etc); no pinched, frayed, or broken wires found.

Finally, almost all problems induced by removing the tank and replacing it will show in the first 100 miles of steady riding. Short rides don't accomplish this.

Checked the fuel lines, throttle cables, breather hoses, and reset the Motronic... No luck. Still stumbles when whacking open the throttle. Bummer..

I'm gonna pull the tank again and see if anything is loose under there, but I doubt it.

bleh.. I hate tracking down stuff like this..

Yep. Stick coil. I rode to restaurant last week and it ran fine. On the way home it started that surging, missing thing. I did spark check and they were all firing. Changed plugs and adjusted valves, no help. Replaced both sticks with Beru's from Euromoto and problem fixed. My bike is an '04 with 17k miles.

And so.. My 04' R1150R is still hesitating under load when it's warm (both weather and / or bike). My mechanic "swears" the coils are fine.. But..

Plugs done, fuel and air filters replaced, injectors synced (and confirmed clear), and the tank has been drained and sludge cleared.

At this point it just has to be the feking Stick coils.. Because what in the hell else can it be?

Fuel, Air, or spark.. My mechanic says all three are "normal".. But see if that was the case it would be running well..

sigh.. I HATE phantom problems.. I hate them soooo much.

If indeed you need new stick coils. Here's my wright-up viewtopic.php?f=2&t=31507 when my stick coils wet out on me for the second time.

I'm guessing that my '03, since it's one plug per, that there are no stick coils?
