Cruising speed on your 1150

Post by rprothero »

Survey What speed/rpm do you get the best performance and least aggression with your bike? I took mine down I 75 to florida and cruised between 85-95 mph at 4.2-4.5 RPMs she seemed to purr nicely . These aren't speed demons but hold their own any opinions on cruising speeds and shifting RPMs ..note at 80 I'm usually in 6th unless I'm pulling ahead of cagers ...

95 mph in Va will land you in jail (if caught). Not that I've never hit triple digits--I have a time or two but not wanting to check out the inside of our jails.

I like 70-75 on our interstates with occasional bursts to 80-85 while passing trucks. I seldom have to downshift at that speed. I have plenty of torque at 3500-4000 rpm.

Agree with 85-95mph.......any faster and windblast becomes intrusive......any slower and they become a bit "vibey".

Seem to have a sweet spot at this speed band but I think US spec 1150's must have a higher top gear ratio compared to UK/Euro spec bikes as mine seems to be turning higher rpm.

85-95 also works well on UK motorways - you can make progress without standing out too much (UK police seem to turn a blind eye to anything travelling at sub 90mph ish).

75-90 I've got a Gimbel fairing because of the wind.
When I'm doing long runs (trough Germany), the bike has it's Touratech paniers and the top case filled with luggage.
In Holland we've got all sorts of speed restictions at the motorways.
Parts are 80mph others 75 or 50 and they even are time dependant.
Like 60 during the day 06:00h-19:00h and during the night 80mph.

The speed limits on rural interstate highways in Aridzona are 75 mph, I usually keep it at 80 mph indicated .

Just feels like the engine is ' loafing ' not even the least bit stressed, compared to my airhead 650's they don't sound ' happy ' at 80 mph !!!
