Spark Plug socket for CamHead

Post by roger l »

Will the spark plug socket from a HexHead fit a CamHead? A friend just bought a BMW R1200RT with the CamHead motor and he needs to start getting some tools to do his own maintenance. I made my socket by turning down a standard 5/8" spark plug socket to .856" OD. I would like to make one for him but I do not want to take his bike apart to find out if my socket will fit.

Thanks

No, camhead plugs take a thin wall 14mm. I bought mine from snap on a long time ago. A thin wall 9/16" will also work.

David:
What is the outside diameter of your 14 mm socket?

Thanks

I had a friend machine down a socket for changing plugs on my '08 Roadster. Got it down to 0.856 inches and it slipped in just fine. Unfortunately, I was checking this on the 'normal' plug position that's easy to reach. I later found out that the underneath plug access hole is smaller, and my socket won't go in. So now I want to do a plug change and don't have a socket. Thus I confirm to you that you need smaller than 0.85 to change plugs.
