This post is to illustrate installation of LED sidelights on an R12R to increase visibility. I also would like to know if they would NOT be legal in any parts of North America, as I have been unable to find a definitive answer on the web.
The lights I installed are 6 element LEDs and I mounted them on the side-facing end of Lumalink light brackets.
The LEDs are from XKGlow, part no. XK084001-2, and cost $12 for a pack of two.

They install nicely with small angle brackets (included) on the end of the Lumalink, and I wired them into the 12V circuit for the PIAA lights.

Does anyone know more about the legal issues surrounding these lights?

Don't know about our cousins to the North (Canadians are North Americans also) but here's every thing you ever wanted to know about United States Federal MV codes addressing lamps,reflectors and associated equipment.

Table III addresses motorcycle lighting, basically saying side lamps aren't required on a MC.
The text specifies where the red and amber lamps are located if required.
The way I see it their is nothing saying you can't put side lamps on. I've replaced the red reflectors on my side cases with red led side lamps. The bags (stock) are slightly tapered to the rear and the lamps are visible from behind the bike. I've been told their an eye catcher at night.

Title 49/5/571 also addresses modulated headlights on motorcycles and could be used to defend yourself from a ticket given by a LEO that is offended by your 'blinking' headlight. Lots of good info in title 49.

Lots of newer cars have side marker lights these days. I don't see how this'd be any different.

That's my totally uninformed opinion based on not reading anything about the matter.

That would be my plea to the officer -- and that I've got a thing for LED lighting.
