Windshield question

Any body try or knows someone who has tried a Parabellum Scout fairing on a R1100r? I've tried 3 different windshields trying to find one that does not buffett. The Scout looks good but a 800 bucks its a lot of money just to give it a try. I really love my R but if I can't solve this buffetting issue, up for sale it goes. Thanks in advance for your input.

I've tried a tall Cee Bailey's with no luck (for sale if anyone wants it!) and right now am using the BMW "sport" shield with slightly better results. Haven't tried a Parabellum, but I've been interested. You may also want to look at a "laminar lip" that lots of folks swear by, and may be a better option than dropping $800 on an experiment.

Phil, I don't think you'd need to sell your R1100R just because there aren't a lot of aftermarket choices for shield available. You can experiment cheaply with different methods, but the key is getting the air that flows over whatever shield you buy - past your head. Some folks buy or fabricate a "Laminar Lip" type of shield (http://www.laminarlip.com/r850r.php), while others just go with an extremely tall lexan windscreen. I have the tall Parabellum Sport shield for my R, and it directs the wind over my head a bit TOO well. I generally prefer a shorter shield (like the Scout), but it's all a compromise when you are left with trying to mitigate the turbulence of air being directed at your torso/face-shield by a shorter windscreen system.

MRA makes a couple of "vario" windscreens in a medium size that fit our bike, for a LOT less than $800.

While I don't own one (and I don't intentionally promote Twisted Throttle merch.), it appears to be an inexpensive alternative to the Scout that includes adjustable buffet-reduction in a similar manner. Do Scouts for the Roadster really cost $800?

I noticed the other day that "Scaretech" or rather airtech streamlining also do a rather nice looking nose faring for the R which might be worth a go - fit is always a bit "fun" with them

I have the MRA vario screen and it really puts out the turbulence unless I lean it WAY back. And ,yes , the scout fairing is $800. I may try the Parabellum next, I just hate the way the mounts look, the turnbuckles and all.

Apparently the screens for an r1150r fit the 1100r using the bmw fitting kit according to the parts guy at our local dealer. I've never parked mine next to an 1150 to compare but given that the clock mounts and headstock area are very similar just the bars that differ, it would seem to make some sense. Before dropping 800 dollars it might be worth scouring out a secondhand one from an 1150 and trying?

I have a 2001 R1100R. I am 6'1". I bought a Plexistar 2 from National Cycle. It is wider and taller than the BMW Sport Screen. The Plexistar 2 also provides a certain amount of hand protection. You can adjust the rake or angle of the screen which is nice. The screen with non-tubular mounting hardware was $250.

But, you have to mount it a little different than the directions say. Not a big deal once you figure it out. The Plexistar 3 was not listed for the R1100R, but I think it would work too.

I had an Aeroflow windscreen. It was just Ok and cost more than the Plexistar.

I have taken my BMW Sport screen and raked or angled it back to get my head in "clean" air. I used washers (spacers) to lower it slightly and longer screws and washers at the 4 mounting points on the screen itself to angle it back. This put my head in "clean" air and still kept the wind back pressure off my chest. My head was in the "air", but it was "clean" air, so I didn't have a headache after a days ride. But, in winter, I wanted more protection. The Plexistar works for me, but I can't speak for the other brands.

I have a laminar attachment for my BMW Sport screen. It velcros on (and off). It doesn't work for me.

If I knew how to attach photos, I would.
